I had a whale of a time playing "Where's Whale-do (like where's waldo!)" :)
What you need to know before you go:
Blue ocean whale watch is located in Moss Landing... about 25 minutes north of Monterey. This company was great- knowledgeable & caring crew who checked up on passengers and shared ginger candy and seasickness potion to put behind your ears.
Seasickness? Why yes, it happens to a lot of people so please remember to take some motion sickness pills before you board (30min-1hr beforehand). It surprises me how many people don't think to do so! The ride can get choppy and those who don't take precaution end up throwing up at the back of the boat.. don't let that be you!
Wear a lot of layers! Do not wear shorts and flip flops (or you will freeze and be miserable!). I wore 2 tank tops, a long sleeve shirt, a thin sweatshirt and a thick jacket and scarf.. and was still freezing!! Remember your gloves and wear close toed shoes. Bring sunglasses too!
Bring snacks/food. The boat is great (carries about 50 people) and has seats on the inside so you can sit during the 4 hour excursion. Please be considerate and put your stuff under your seat!.... I think its silly that I had to stand at times even though there were empty seats just because people left their stuff on the chairs. They were nowhere to be found and I didn't want to move their stuff for them =/
During our trip (7/21) we saw several blue whales in the distance (we saw part of their backs & their sprouts), 3 humpback whales that traveled together, a tufted puffin and the best part... an orca whale!! Due to laws that protect the whales :) boats aren't allowed to approach a whale and need to stay 100 yards away, so this means if you do see whales you might only catch a glimpse of them. You need to be patient and know this before booking a trip whale watching. I think too many people see rare pictures of whales leaping and think that they will see this on their trip and although you may, you may also not! Come with realistic expectations that you MAY see a whale, likely off in the distance. We were lucky that the orca came realllly close the boat (I think within 20 ft) and that was truly an amazing experience that was worth the freezing cold!
Overall, I would definitely go with this company again, as I liked their boat, staff, professionalism and friendliness.
PS, now is the time to go whale watching! It's even in the news that there are a suprisingly large amount of whales feeding in Monterey right now. Hope you see some whales :)
