ABOUT THE GOVERNOR

Josh Green, M.D.

Governor Josh Green is a proud husband, father, and physician. For the past 20 years, Governor Green cared for Big Island families as a doctor. He served in the State House of Representatives and the State Senate from 2004 to 2018. As chair of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee, he passed “Luke’s Law,” which provides care for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, as well as tobacco and e-cigarette regulations, which increased the legal age for purchasing tobacco and e-cigarettes to 21. Passionate about housing solutions, Governor Green helped create “Kauhale” communities to get unsheltered veterans, kūpuna, and others into safe housing options. These efforts are ongoing and will continue to be one of his top priorities as Governor.  Governor Green expanded the role of Lieutenant Governor by spearheading the largest healthcare response in state history during the COVID pandemic. These critical emergency efforts resulted in Hawaiʻi having the nation’s lowest COVID-19 fatality rate.

Today we announce the Lahaina HERO Awards, a new initiative aimed at recognizing the extraordinary resilience and dedication of Department of Education (DOE) employees who have played a critical role in keeping Lahaina schools open following the devastating wildfires on Maui last year. HERO stands for Honoring Employees’ Resilience and Optimism in serving Lahaina students in spite of the challenges presented by the wildfires.

The dedication shown by our Lahaina school employees during and after the wildfires is nothing short of extraordinary. They embody the very essence of aloha—resilient in the face of adversity, compassionate in their service to others and deeply committed to the well-being of our keiki. These awards are a heartfelt recognition of their incredible efforts, but more than that, they are a celebration of the unwavering spirit that these individuals have brought to their community. In the darkest of times, they have been a beacon of hope and strength for Lahaina’s students and families. We are profoundly grateful for their courage, sacrifice and love for our island ‘ohana.

This one-time initiative is made possible through a generous donation from Marc Benioff, Chair and CEO of Salesforce, and his wife, Lynne, longtime Hawai‘i residents and philanthropists who were moved by the incredible challenges faced by these employees and the importance of maintaining educational continuity for Lahaina’s students.

Repeated fatal shootings along the Leeward Coast are beyond worrisome, they’re just horrifying. Enough is enough.

The entirety of government feels that the time has come for a deep collaboration to end the violence we have seen across O‘ahu, and particularly throughout the Leeward Coast. This is an unprecedented collaboration between the federal, state, and county governments.

We are joining together to increase safety for our Wai‘anae and the broader Leeward Coast community. Residents are already seeing a more visible presence of multiple law enforcement agencies and rest assured, these efforts will continue.

We are joining together to increase safety for our Wai‘anae and broader Leeward Coast community in response to the unacceptable violent crimes. Residents are already seeing a more visible presence of multiple law enforcement agencies and rest assured, these efforts will continue.

In partnership with the Mayor, Chief of Police and other local officials, we met late Thursday night and rapidly developed a plan to bring significantly more law enforcement support to Wai‘anae, including added support from the state Department of Law Enforcement, Department of Land and Natural Resources DOCARE officers and other law enforcement capacity. This gun violence must stop, and anyone threatening or harming others will face immediate arrest and prosecution.
