Dan Haggerty, an actor best known for playing the title character in 1974’s The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams, has died after a months-long battle with cancer of the spine, his rep and longtime friend confirmed to EW. He was 74.

Haggerty appeared in multiple films in the ’60s and early ’70s before breaking big with The Life and Times, which followed a man who retreated into the woods and befriended a bear cub after being wrongly accused of murder.

In 1977, Haggerty reprised the role in a TV series adaptation of the same name that ran for one year. After that show concluded, he continued to appear in films and TV shows up until his death. His most recent credit is 2013’s Axe Giant: The Wrath of Paul Bunyan, a horror movie based on the lumberjack of folklore fame.
