She was 63. The Nebraska-born, Iowa-raised actress co-starred in all six seasons of NBC’s 1980s hospital drama as the warmhearted surgical resident. She guest-starred several times as a judge on Homicide: Life on the Street. She was twice married to Oz creator Tom Fontana, who was a writer and producer on both St. Elsewhere and Homicide. Her other credits include M*A*S*H, Moonlighting, and The Philanthropist, as well as the TV movies Cocaine: One Man’s Seduction and Full Ride. In the 1990s, Lewis moved to Maui and then to Sedona, Arizona, where she taught acting workshops at the Zaki Gordon Institute of Independent Film, and served as a program director at the Sedona International Film Festival. Lewis and Fontana have a son, Jade Scott Lewis.
