About us

Since 1791, the University of Vermont has worked to move humankind forward. Today, UVM is a Public Ivy and top research university of a perfect size, large enough to offer a breadth of ideas, resources, and opportunities, yet small enough to enable close faculty-student mentorship across all levels of study, from bachelor's to M.D. programs. Here, students' educational experience and activities are enriched by our location — from the energy and innovation of Burlington to the forests, farms, and independent spirit of Vermont. UVM provides students endless ways to explore the world, challenge ideas, and dig in on the most pressing issues of our time.

A new exchange program spearheaded by President Suresh Garimella connects with leaders at IIT Madras (where he completed his undergraduate work in mechanical engineering in 1985) to bring students to UVM where they are working with researchers on pressing real-world problems. IIT Madras student Santhosh Balasubramanian spent time in Vermont this summer working with UVM Prof. Pandey to find ways to make the electric grid more predictable—as more solar, wind, and other carbon-free energy sources are added to the mix. UVM volunteers have come together to plant a naturalistic garden outside Votey Hall. This project will create beautiful gardens that support wildlife, attract pollinators, and retain water as our region experiences heavier rain events. Aligning with the university's Comprehensive Sustainability Plan and Planetary Health Initiative, this project is a great example of collaboration and commitment to biodiversity and environmental stewardship. Funding for the project comes from CEMS and the Sustainable Campus Fund, which solicits proposals from students each semester. “We believe firmly in the inherent dignity of all students and want to meet students where they’re at and affirm their best selves,” Dr. Glezen, a physician with Student Health Services Gender-affirming care is an essential function of primary care services and, simply put, it supports students in being healthy, engaged, and social. At UVM, Student Health Services invests in care specifically for transgender, gender non-conforming, and non-binary students. UVM is committed to research, education, and innovation. We're thrilled to announce the university is partnering with BioLabs to launch an incubator space to support entrepreneurs and start-up companies specializing in life sciences research with fully equipped combination office and laboratory space to test and scale their research. The BioLabs Innovation Center will offer select tenants nearly 7,000 sq. ft. of shared wet labs, common areas, and flexible office space, allowing approximately 10-20 early-stage companies to tailor their laboratories according to their needs. Currently, BioLabs partners with an elite group of universities, pharma companies, and others worldwide, and UVM is the first rural university to join the BioLabs ecosystem. From a Vermont student who started a non-profit that distributes basic hygiene products to people in need to a student from Ontario who is preparing a research paper on iron oxide-coated nanoparticles for publication in an academic journal, the UVM Class of 2028 is already making an impact for people and planet. This class is one of the most accomplished and diverse first-year group of students in the university’s history, drawing from nearly 30,000 applicants. Distinguished by a continued increase in students from Vermont – but not confined by the state’s borders, roughly 50 percent of the class is from outside New England—including approximately 47 states and 28 countries—reflecting the university’s growing national and international recognition. The university’s new cohort of graduate students –which boasts students from 50 countries—continues the trend of excellence and diversity. Applications to the UVM Graduate College’s 30 doctoral, 55 master’s, and over 30 graduate certificate programs for Fall 2024 experienced a 14-percent increase, with a significant increase in international applications. “UVM is widely recognized for offering a world-class educational experience for our students,” said President Suresh Garimella. “Our commitment to Vermonters helps fulfill our public land-grant mission here in our state while broadening our appeal beyond the borders of Vermont makes us a global destination for higher education.” Learn more about our newest Catamounts: https://lnkd.in/eTqnvAfv #UVM #ClassOf2028 #UniversityOfVermont
