Songs of Freedom

Fri, Jan 12, 6-9pm, 2018

1MARTINOn January 12 celebrate the life and dreams of Martin Luther King in dance and song with local musicians.

We come together to bring life to Martin Luther King, who is well known for his dreams, but is less remembered for his unsettling remarks about complacent moderates, of American imperialism and warmongering, and of the capitalist system itself.

Between uplifting songs and folk music we will hear some heavy quotes from King. “Why is equality so assiduously avoided? Why does white America delude itself, and how does it rationalize the evil it retains?” – Where Do We Go From Here, 1967.

“A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.” – Beyond Vietnam, 1967.

As the Bob Marley song goes, Won’t you help us sing these songs of freedom?
