ABOUT IVS

The Institute for Vaccine Safety was established in 1997 at the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health. Our mission is to independently assess vaccines and vaccine safety to help guide decision makers and educate physicians, the public and the media about key issues surrounding the safety of vaccines. The institute’s goal is to work toward preventing disease using the safest vaccines possible.

New England Journal of Medicine Commentary on How to Fund and Improve Vaccine Safety Systems

In a recently published New England Journal of Medicine commentary, Funding Postauthorization Vaccine-Safety Science, IVS Director, Dr. Daniel Salmon, and co-authors propose amending the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program tax code, further strengthening the vaccine safety system for future routine and pandemic immunizations and rebuilding confidence in the immunization system.

Article on How to Fund and Improve Vaccine Safety Systems in Expert Opinion on Drug Safety

IVS Director, Dr. Daniel Salmon, and co-authors discuss vaccine pharmacovigilance programs and make recommendations on how to fund and improve safety systems into the future. The recently published article, Lessons Learned from COVID-19, H1N1, and Routine Vaccine Pharmacovigilance in the United States: A Path to a More Robust Vaccine Safety Program, describes the key characteristics of vaccine pharmacovigilance programs, reviews U.S. vaccine pharmacovigilance for routine vaccination programs, COVID-19, and H1N1, and makes recommendations for improving future vaccine safety systems.
