We adopted a dog from here a couple of months ago. This shelter cares so much about the animals in their care and does everything they can to keep them healthy and help them find their forever homes. Staff are friendly and the volunteers here are hardwokring.

This place is awesome! I love doing dogs day out and spending time with the pups! This week we spent some time with babe Ruth and this lovable pup is a sweetheart and playful but calm doggie. I loved every minute I had with him.

I wanted to adopt a pet at southern pines Animal Shelter in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and I wanted a small dog (under 25 lbs grown), and I went there last sunday, was there at 12 pm, as required, when I got there, there was no pet and I had called them before I left going there (it is about 21 miles from where I live). The rep there told me I would have to check back and to submit my wish to adopt the kind of animal I wanted on the wish adoption part of their website, and I will get emails when the type of pet I want is available for adoption there at the shelter.
So Wednesday morning, September the 19, I received a email informing me that an animal I am interested in is available (I got the email about 8:30 am, (they don't open until 1pm everyday, closed on Wednesdays). THey close at 5 pm. SO I called to see if the animal was available after they opened at 1pm, and gave the attendant the pet ID #, and she put me on hold, and forgot about me on the phone, she never came back on line, I had to hang up and call back. I was on hold for about 25 minutes or so.
So when I called back the rep told me that dos was no longer available even though the email said it was. I complained about the rude service and I spoke to someone there might had been the manager, I don't know, but she said sometimes the emails or not updated as animals are adopted, I said "well, you need to update that cause of people are told the animals are available, but when they get there the animals are not available because of the not-up-dated email in formation, then people has wasted their time and gas money. She didn't seem to care about that.
They want the public to give donations, and want o adopt animals to good homes, but they need to get their stuff straight, I suspect it is because of poor management, and incompetent employees. I don't know if I am going to rely on Southern Pines Animal Shelter to let me know when an animal I am interested in is available for adoption, the information might not be accurate or up-to-date.

We've gotten all of our pets here and we absolutely love not only the animals we've gotten, but the service we received while adopting them. Very friendly staff and you can tell they care about their jobs and the animals they help.

I've adopted two cats from here...not just any cats - literally the best cats ever! They came happy, healthy, and very well socialized. When we move into a bigger place, I'll definitely get my next dog from them.
Adoption fees are extremely reasonable. Your pet comes up to date on shots, microchipped, and spay/neutered. Bonus: they regularly have specials where adoption fees are waived.
But you don't need to adopt to help them out! They're always looking for fosters and volunteers. They are an asset to our community, and I will always be looking for any way to help their mission.

PLEASE READ: THEY ADVERTISE AS NO KILL, BUT THEY AREN'T REALLY. My rating would be zero if it would let me post without giving a rating. I recently was caring for a stray and she was very pregnant. To give birth in less than a week. I had been caring for her for months. Her name is Green Bean. One of my neighbors is a volunteer at Southern Pines and was able to get her in a carrier and took her in because "it will be safer for her to have her babies inside and where they can monitor her." I went last week to check on her. At first they couldn't find her. Then when they did find her, she was fine and I was even shown where they had planned to move her to have the babies up near the office.

Jump forward to today - I go to see if she has had the babies to be told that they took her to get her spayed and terminated the pregnancy. No explanation. Nothing. They killed the babies less than a week from her giving birth. I have footage of where you can see the babies moving inside of her. That's how close to birth she was. They told me that no one was willing to foster her. But did they post on their foster group Facebook page and ask who would foster? No. Did they ask me last week when I was there checking on her? No. I am beyond mad. I have fostered kittens with Southern Pines before and I will support the animals they already have there. But I will never again take a stray to them. Show of hands, who would have fostered the mother and kittens if you would have known? Because they told me no one was willing but there is not even a post about her needing fostering on their foster group page. I am heartbroken and beyond mad.

Wanted to adopt a German Shepherd and was told all the GSD's were adopted. That seemed strange since they were all still posted as adoptable on petfinders. Called back in a few hours and asked for the manager/director and was told she was not in. I asked when she would return and they told me "they did not know". I asked for her name and they refused to give it to me. I go suspicious and called the Mayor's office and found out the shelter has been run by an independent contractor and partially funded by the city. I called the number for for manager that I had received from the Mayor's office and there was no answer. Finally after three hours I found out the GSD's were being transported out of state on Saturday and WERE available when I called Friday morning. Got a call from the Mayor's office around 3pm and lady told me the GSD was available for adoption but I must be there before 5pm. I live three hours from the shelter. Seems like they would rather ship the adoptable pets off to the North than adopt them locally. I have read some stories on the "transport" services and the costs. Something is NOT right.

Great people. Adopted my heart dog, Maggie, from here. She was a joy. She has passed of a seizure disorder but her 5 years in our family were great!
