BMW X4 to be replaced by electric iX4, eventually – report

Despite BMW unveiling an all-new X3 recently, its coupe-style sibling the X4 will be axed next year, and buyers will have to wait for its electric replacement.

The BMW X4 won't see a third generation, the German car maker has confirmed – however, an electric iX4 could be in the works to take its place.

While a new-generation X3 was unveiled by BMW just last month, the company told Italy's Motor1 it had no plans for a coupe version, badged as the X4 since 2014.

According to the report, those wanting a coupe-styled SUV can either choose from the recently-released X2 – which is just 200mm shorter than the outgoing X4, and much closer in pricing – while buyers needing extra space should upgrade to the larger X6.

For everyone else, BMW says the X3 is "ideal".

BMW insider, known online as 'ynguldyn', claims the BMW X4 will end production in November 2025 – with plans for an electric iX4 to start production 12 months later.

Along with three versions of the iX4 electric – a 40 xDrive, 50 xDrive, and M60 xDrive – the unconfirmed report claims there could be a high-performance iX4 M also in development.

While BMW has yet to announce whether an iX4 is coming, in August 2023 Automotive News also speculated an iX4 was set to enter production in late 2026, underpinned by the car maker's forthcoming Neue Klasse electric platform.

For the time being, it's believed the ageing X4 will be sold alongside the all-new X3.
