Media training on disability inclusion in social protection, September, 2022.

In promoting efforts towards building up knowledge among stakeholders on disability-inclusive social protection, the SP&PFM Programme in Ethiopia partnered with the Federation of Ethiopian Associations of Persons with Disabilities to engage with journalists and promote stronger advocacy by the media for disability inclusion within social protection systems. The two-day capacity-building exercise on 22–23 September in Adama attracted 27 participants from nine media institutions.

The objectives focused on:

  • strengthen the role of media in promoting inclusive social protection systems in the country;
  • create opportunity for sharing experiences among media institutions to stimulate, motivate, promote and advocate for increased investment in social protection by all actors, at all levels and in a coherent and coordinated manner; and
  • trigger media interest to engage and interact with various government social protection line ministries to understand the extent to which social protection systems are disability-inclusive.

The exercise led to commitments to promote disability issues in media programming. Three media institutions also agreed to produce print and electronic articles showcasing the importance of disability inclusion in social protection systems.

Additionally, the workshop received coverage by four media outlets.
