International Symposium on improving synergies between social protection and public finance management
 
More than 200 participants from 24 countries gathered in Geneva for an international symposium (26–27 June) on the remarkable achievements of the SP&PFM Programme. 13 million people in 24 countries are estimated to have benefited from increased access to improved social protection systems through the work of the SP&PFM Programme that has helped to enhance the design and financing of national social protection systems.  Read more.

Collaboration is driving the success of SP&PFM Programme
 
The power of collaboration has emerged as a crucial factor in addressing complex global challenges, stressed Erica Gerretsen during her closing remarks (28 June) for the international symposium on the SP&PFM Programme’s achievements. Gerretsen is the Director for Human Development, Migration, Governance and Peace at the European Commission's Department for International Partnerships. “This innovative partnership has achieved impressive results in improving synergies between social protection and public finance management, supporting 17 countries in their COVID-19 response, improving the lives of millions and demonstrating that social protection is not only a human right but also an investment” she said.

Survey in Angola details characteristics and challenges of workers in the informal economy
 
The SP&PFM country project provided technical support to Angola’s National Institute of Statistics on monitoring implementation of a survey that the Professional Organizations Representing Actors of the Informal Economy. The survey reached more than 11,000 informal workers in Luanda, generating insight on the challenges of the informal economy in the Angolan capital. Read more

Burkina Faso studies extending social protection to workers in the informal economy
 
With assistance from the SP&PFM country project, the Government of Burkina Faso carried out a study on extending social protection to workers in the informal economy.  The report presents a map of coverage levels by region and various mechanisms for providing social protection to workers in the informal economy. SP&PFM study leads to recommendations for including migrants in social protection policies in Colombia
 
The SP&PFM country project in Colombia launched a study aimed at informing recommendations for public policies that promote easier access by the country’s migrant population to the national social protection system. The report provides a characterization of the migrant population, their barriers in accessing the social security system and five recommendations to facilitate their right to social protection. Read more.

Workshops focus on disability-inclusive social protection and employment opportunities for people living with disabilities in Kyrgyzstan
 
With funding from the European Union, the SP&PFM country project in Kyrgyzstan hosted two national workshops (27 and 29 June) to discuss improving disability-inclusive social protection and employment opportunities for people living with disabilities. The two sessions involved 85 national actors and public officials. Read more

Senegal sets up a network of parliamentarians to discuss social protection financing
 
Senegal has established a thematic network among parliamentarians for increasing the level of budgetary debates, voting on laws to ratify International Labour Organization Conventions, and then translating them into national law and improving the accountability of social protection spending, including the possible adoption of an umbrella law on social protection. The network will partner with the SP&PFM country project in advocating for more and better funding for social protection. Read more.

Ethiopia, Uganda, and Zambia learn from each other on social protection and its sustainable financing
 
SP&PFM country project implementers and partners in Ethiopia and Uganda travelled to Lusaka, Zambia (9–12 May) for a learning exchange on sustainable financing of the country’s social protection system. The collaboration involved officials from the Ministries of Labour and Finance, social partners, representatives of civil society organizations and organizations of people living with disabilities and beneficiaries of various social protection schemes. Read more.
