Can the UK develop a new model for delivering transformational infrastructure? Our Chief Officer for Business and Markets, Richard de Cani, explores this question on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme with Felicity Hannah. They discuss lessons from global approaches and the role the private sector can play in unlocking and accelerating economic growth. Richard's insights are drawn from a new report led by Arup, commissioned by the Mayors of Greater Manchester and the West Midlands, and supported by a consortium of private sector partners. The report proposes an innovative approach to the Midlands-North West Rail Link, aimed at creating a resilient passenger and freight rail network that delivers essential growth at a reduced cost. We have some exciting news for UK transport infrastructure. The launch of the Opportunity through Connectivity Report is a critical step forward in enhancing connections between key cities and towns in the Midlands and the North and delivering growth across these regions. This project will play a pivotal role in increasing capacity for both passengers and freight. Improving transport connections between Greater Manchester and the West Midlands is not only critical to unlocking higher productivity but will also drive a strong skills pipeline for apprenticeships and careers. As demand grows in the coming decades, so will opportunities for young talent and professionals across the UK. The funding model for the Midlands-North West Rail Link must be founded upon greater private sector engagement, using expertise and innovation to drive efficiency and lower capital costs. We look forward to working with the new Government to drive this forward, to reposition the UK to deliver greater infrastructure investment and growth across the nation. Underpinning our work to shape more inclusive cities has to be a deep understanding of people needs and behaviours. We love being involved in this new research from UCL which will provide new data into our city modelling services. #UCL #WeAreArup
Excited to be here behind the scenes at UCL PEARL. This innovative Neuro-Architecture Demonstrator will generate an evidence-based understanding of how different people navigate spaces. This research aligns with many of Arup’s key areas of work; an understanding of #peoplemovement underpins work across numerous sectors of the company and a wide range of our clients. #UCLPEARL #neuroarchitecture #citymodelling

Launched today at the Innovate4Cities Conference, our new Climate Innovation Readiness Navigator for Cities and Local Governments (CIRN) aims to help cities and local governments identify critical gaps in their ability to deliver innovative climate solutions, operating as a practical guide for them to unlock transformative action at pace. We developed the resource in collaboration with GCoM which allows for the rapid assessment of cities’ readiness to govern, generate and adopt innovative solutions to address climate change. The Navigator includes indicators that can be used to assess the ability and capacity of cross-sector institutions and civil society to engage in climate action efforts, helping to surface barriers to and opportunities for innovation. The Navigator is intended to serve as a foundation for cities – and the many sectors and organizations that thrive within them - to cultivate cross-sector partnerships for accelerated climate action towards meeting the Paris Agreement goals.
