Human Factors Engineering: Systems Thinking to Enhance Patient Safety During our in-person training over September 24 and 25, we will share the foundational knowledge you need to understand patient safety adverse events from a true systems perspective. After learning the model of healthcare as a complex sociotechnical system, you will learn and practice techniques to analyze the component parts and their interactions. Once you’ve learned to uncover all contributing system factors to your patient safety challenges, you will learn how to develop effective and sustainable solutions that support the work of healthcare professionals. Applications have been made for CEUs! Register now: https://hubs.la/Q02FCjKT0 #patientsafety #safety #healthcaresafety #quality #riskmanagement #healthcare

[WATCH ON DEMAND] Healthcare professionals are actively seeking solutions to combat “alarm fatigue,” a phenomenon that occurs when telemetry monitors or patient-worn medical devices frequently trigger false alarms. ICYMI: In this webinar, ECRI safety experts discuss improvements in the implementation and management of telemetry systems to combat alarm fatigue and reduce the risk of any alarm-related adverse events. 🔗: https://hubs.la/Q02JDMf50

“In the delivery of patient care, an actual adverse event or miss is almost never the result of an individual failure. It is a series of events which leads up to that catastrophic moment,” said Dr. Marcus Schabacker, ECRI CEO and President, in his recent Member Masterclass with The Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) on the ECRI Total Systems Safety Approach. 🔗Learn more about the Total Systems Safety masterclass: https://hubs.la/Q02JDNst0 #TotalSystemsSafety #TSS #ACHS #PatientSafety #HealthcareSystems

Thanks to Repertoire Magazine for featuring predictions and insights from ECRI’s Associate Director of Strategy and Innovation Andy Poole, FACHE in “The Race to Lower Acuity,” a look at the speedy move of health procedures to the lowest-acuity setting. “As more procedures move to outpatient settings, new technology may need to be incorporated to ensure there is adequate monitoring of the patient, depending on the type of procedure," said Andy Poole. "For example, with spine cases, you may need additional neurophysiological monitoring capabilities. Additional technologies that limit the risk of blood loss are also important to outpatient centers... With all new technologies and instrumentation, there will need to be a continued investment in equipment to properly clean and sterilize to protect against infection risk.” Read more: https://hubs.la/Q02JfhVH0

New Blog | Five Key Takeaways on Video-Based Patient Monitoring for Preventing Falls "ECRI named ongoing challenges related to patient falls as one of its 2024 Top 10 Patient Safety Concerns because falls continue to be the number one sentinel event reported to the Joint Commission despite the focused attention given to their frequency and severity. Fall prevention was also a 2023 National Patient Safety Goal for both hospitals and long-term care facilities because between 700,000 to 1 million hospitalized patients and about 800,000 nursing home residents fall each year. While patient falls may not be completely eliminated within healthcare settings, person-operated video monitoring systems can reduce fall incidence, fall-related injuries, and operational costs, according to a recently published ECRI Clinical Evidence Assessment." Thanks to the American Medical Association for amplifying ECRI’s message about the dangers of a shame-and-blame culture in the healthcare workforce in their recent article. Patient safety starts with building a culture in which physicians, other health professionals, staff and patients feel respected, President & CEO Dr. Marcus Schabacker shared in this fireside chat. The tendency now is to individualize mistakes rather than looking at what went wrong from a systems perspective. “We don't provide the necessary training, the simulation, the learning system that helps us to stay agile and react to things near-term in real time,” Dr. Schabacker said. “We really need to change our approach holistically.” 🔗Read more: https://hubs.la/Q02JfFFW0 #AMA #Culture #Healthcare
