🚨GRA reacts to new IRENA report: Policy action and finance urgently required to reach #3xRenewables by 2030 Renewables are the fastest-growing source of power worldwide, with new global renewable capacity in 2023 representing a record 14% increase from 2022, shows the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in a new report. However, the analysis found that even if renewables continue to be deployed at the current rate over the next seven years, the world will fall 13.5% short of the target to triple renewables to 11.2TW. In an interview with Climate Home News, GRA’s CEO Bruce Douglas highlighted the geographical imbalances in global renewables deployment: “We shouldn’t be celebrating. This growth is nowhere near enough and it’s not in the right places.” He added that #finance is “by far” the biggest challenge to getting renewables off the ground in the Global South. Africa, for example, has received less than 2% of global investments in renewable energy over the past twenty years. “That’s not acceptable in terms of an equitable transition,” said Bruce Douglas, noting that shortcomings in renewables financing entail less development benefits, fewer jobs created, and a reduced access to affordable energy. Sonia Dunlop, Vice-Chair of GRA and CEO of the Global Solar Council (GSC), said that the public sector could offer financial incentives to help de-risk renewables projects for investors: “We need to get multilateral development banks leaning into big renewables projects and taking on some of the risk, which can then attract private finance.” Another major bottleneck for the expansion of renewables around the world are #grids and #permitting. For Sonia Dunlop, the solution to grid congestion is more storage: batteries for short-term storage and other technologies for longer-term storage, such as pumped storage hydropower (#PSH). According to Bruce Douglas, merely increasing the number of staff to handle project applications within grid and planning authorities could potentially release thousands of gigawatts of renewable energy. Commenting on the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)’s Renewable Energy Statistics 2024, COP28 President Dr. Sultan Al Jaber stressed the need to increase the pace and scale of development to meet the global goal of tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030, adding: “this moment provides a significant opportunity to add strong national energy targets in NDCs to support the global goal of keeping the 1.5°C target within reach. Above all, we must change the narrative that climate investment is a burden to it being an unprecedented opportunity for shared socio-economic development.” Read the report: https://lnkd.in/dZtNbxdS #COP28 #UAEConsensus

🌊 Despite positive progress in offshore wind development - with a total of 63 GW of installed capacity in 2022, meeting the 1.5°C goal requires #offshore wind capacities of 494 GW by 2030 and 2 465 GW by 2050. 🌐 To ensure that the tripling #renewableenergy capacity pledge by 2030 is met, offshore wind deployment needs to be accelerated. While the fixed bottom configuration remains dominant, floating offshore wind is gaining increased attention from wind energy community. 💡 The global floating wind industry is still nascent, with approximately 270 MW of operational capacity as of 2023. However, the global pipeline for new floating offshore projects is 244 GW, evidencing the great interest in this technology. 📝 International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) launches its Floating Offshore Wind Outlook, detailing recent market developments, technological foundations, grid connections, port infrastructure, sustainability, and hydrogen coupling potential in the floating offshore wind space.
