We have had the most amazing time with five incredibly bright and intelligent young students this week when our Viasat Beyond: Space winners Ash Goldsmith, Krish Thakrar, Mesha Tennyson, Isabella Hughes and Amar Birring, joined us for the Viasat Sustainability Experience Week in London. From discovering how to build a satellite, hearing from Thomas Ormston and Simon Wood about the European Space Agency - ESA's Earth observation activities and Mars Express program, to coming up with concepts around sustainability initiatives for oil spills at sea, utilising our satellite network, it’s been a concentrated and full-on learning experience for them all. To top it off they visited Cranfield University's DARTeC center on Thursday when they had an opportunity to see the Passenger Experience Lab, watch a UAV demo, take a tour of the Digital Air Traffic Control Centre, Aerospace Integration Research Centre and Future Flight Simulator. What’s next from this inspiring bunch of 16-17-year-olds? More studies, university and then hopefully they will think about joining us for a career in satellite communications. Space Norway’s Arctic Satellite Broadband Mission (ASBM), the world’s first highly elliptical orbit (HEO) mission carrying the commercial broadband payloads GX10A & 10B, is currently slated for launch in mid-July. 🚀🛰️ Once the satellites are in service, the two Global Xpress high-speed Ka-band payloads are designed to extend our global footprint to meet customer expectations – even if standing on the North Pole! It will also be the first time our network will incorporate payloads in HEO to provide dedicated Arctic coverage. It’s midway through the Viasat Sustainability Experience Week at our London HQ for the five Viasat Beyond: Space competition winners and already the 16-17-year-olds have: 📡 Learned all about satellite frequencies 🌍 Discussed Earth observation missions with Thomas Ormston from the European Space Agency - ESA 🛰️ Discovered how to fly a satellite in our Satellite Control Centre 🌊 Completed a product development simulation on how a combination of Earth observation, our resilient and reliable L-band satellite network and AI can track spillages/illegal waste dumping in the oceans. It’s time for the five winners of our Viasat Beyond: Space competition to roll up their sleeves and get down to some hard work and strategic thinking as they join us for a Sustainability Experience Week in London. 📢📢 Just announced 📢📢 we're working with European Space Agency - ESA, to maximise #satellite capacity through #optical communications and #AI-based automation. Together with partners and ESA member states, the cutting-edge #AIDAN Next project will see us further develop our Optical Feeder Link system. We have already been working on the new technology through the first #AIDAN innovation project. The testbed project has been enabling industry partners to lower the barrier in the adoption of satellite communication-based services, enhancing performance and reducing costs compared with other technologies - primarily for fixed and mobile #satellite applications.
