نبذة عني

Experienced professional managing a multi-disciplinary program focusing on the convergence of digitalization, distributed energy, and behavioral science to bring about a more sustainable use of energy and water in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

My current engagements revolve around two main interrelated considerations with the ultimate goal of maximising broad acceptance and adoption of novel products, services, and business models (1) implementing collaborative and agile development methods in multi-stakeholder and interdisciplinary projects and, (2) embedding insights from social and behavioural sciences into the different stages of development and policy making.

During my career, I have worked in collaboration with a wide range of businesses, industry groups, research organisations, universities, consulting firms, EU institutions, governmental and international bodies in Europe, Turkey, the UAE, South Africa, USA, Australia, India, and North-East Asia.

I have successfully supported the design, deployment, analysis and evaluation of a large number of ICT-enabled energy efficiency and demand flexibility solutions as part of multi-stakeholder and interdisciplinary projects for policymakers, DSO, energy supplier, ESCO, and technology company clients. These projects required leveraging large and diverse international teams typically involving front-end developers, data scientists, electrical engineers, policymakers, and academics. I have also provided specialist advice on market and consumer insights as well as business and technology trends on numerous occasions to a large number of clients globally.

My main interests and areas of expertise include:
- Behavioural insights for policymaking
- Green tech innovation and innovation ecosystems
- Customer engagement and behaviour
- Develop and bring to market novel user-centric solutions and business models
- Convergence of cheaper renewable energy technologies, digital applications, and the rising role of electricity
- Implement practical collaborative and agile R&D&I methods that improve stakeholder participation and adoption
- Manage multi-stakeholder and interdisciplinary projects and teams

Following on from Empower Demand, a ground-breaking research, which quantitatively analyzed 100 demand response programmes around the world, Empower Demand - phase 2, investigates the qualitative issues concerning how best to empower consumers to reduce consumption through a more intelligent approach to the way the energy industry and its technologies interact with customers. The Empower Demand 2 research has identified new approaches to preparing the public for the smart future in ways that enable consumers to make more informed decisions and better use of smart energy demand infrastructure when it arrives.

Pilot programmes to-date have experienced large variations in their levels of success, but while many have done some things well, the research indicates that the ingredients for true success have been spread among them. Through qualitatively investigating a selection of eight of the best residential DR programmes, from Australia, the USA and Europe, Empower Demand 2 has found that success depends on a plethora of criteria.

In this study, which was based on documentary research and interview surveys, four Nordic countries were targeted to ascertain the circumstances under which these countries introduced retail competition and to uncover the details of the institution of retail competition. The study also compared and evaluated electricity prices and the trends in the number of customers that have switched suppliers following electricity reform. In addition, the study clarified the market strategies of electric power companies in Nordic countries and the changes that took place in their corporate performance. Moreover, based on the findings of a survey conducted after electricity reform in Japan, the study examined the implications that the evaluation of Nordic countries might have for electricity reform in Japan, and from the customer perspective.

The project will introduce a novel framework and reference big data architecture that leverages data, primary or secondarily related to the electricity domain. Data coming from diverse sources, such as APIs, historical data, statistics, sensor / IoT data, weather data, energy market data and various other open data sources will help the electricity value chain stakeholders to simultaneously enhance their data reach and improve their internal intelligence on electricity-related optimization functions. Stakeholders will get involved in novel sharing / trading models of data sources and intelligence, in order to gain better insights and shift individual decision-making at a collective intelligence level. In this context, SYNERGY will attempt to unleash the data-driven innovation and collaboration potential across currently diversified and fragmented electricity actors, acting as multiplier of the “combined” data value that can be accrued, shared and traded, and re-conceiving real-time data sharing against traditionally bilateral contracting applied in the electricity sector, to enable holistic optimization of the operation of electricity networks and the energy performance of their constituent components (RES plants, buildings, districts).

I helped design the strategy and will lead the implementation of living labs in demonstration sites to enable collaborative knowledge generation and integration, technology customization and validation against real market and user needs, as well as end-product definition and go-to-market strategy creation.

The project’s overall goal is to enable the integration of ever more intermittent renewables in European energy systems through the coordination of electricity, gas and heat networks and assets focusing on energy storage and conversion techniques. The simulation of the integration between electricity, gas and heat networks models, together with conversion/storage technologies models for power-to-gas, power-to-heat and virtual thermal energy storage, will help to understand and quantify how these conversions can affect network stability, reliability and responsiveness as well as to optimize these metrics across networks and avoid curtailment of renewable energy sources.

My role in the project has been to provide projections on the characteristics of future energy markets taking 2040 – 2050 as a time horizon to be used for modelling and simulation exercises as well as imagining future applications and customer value propositions for P2G and P2H market offerings.

The project aims to provide a consumer-oriented behavioural change framework that focuses on the discovery, quantification and revelation of energy-hungry behaviours/activities and conveys meaningful energy-use feedback to motivate and engage users into a continuous process of learning and improvement. Facilitated by an open and secure ICT ecosystem integrated into the building, the solution will be further complemented with light-weight, human-centric, automated control features that consider occupant thermal and visual comfort profiles and supportively control HVAC and lights so as to further minimise energy waste, while always keeping occupants within acceptable comfort boundaries and preserving a healthy and safe indoor environment.

The project will, in its last phase, leverage on the findings to define, formulate and validate novel service-based business models for energy retailers.

My role in the project is to create the framework to integrate consumers' and market actors’ feedback into the development of the new services through a series of co-creation workshops, living labs and interviews, support the 5 energy utility pilot partners for the organisation and analysis of the outcomes. As the project developed, I also became very much involved in developing the front-end of the solution (segmentation, feedback messages, recommendations, alerts, interface) working with behavioural experts and IT engineers.

It is also developing charging systems and load management solutions to enable customers to reach their green operation targets. To support their ambition, Kalmar was looking to increase their knowledge of the energy markets their customers are operating in focusing on 6 markets: USA (West coast and East coast), Netherlands; UK; Germany, Belgium. The study provided strategic insights into the price drivers and regulatory changes on the horizon in each location, the availability of various procurement options and other advanced market solutions that lead to cost savings and an increased usage of renewable energy (e.g. PPAs, demand response, load curtailment, battery power, etc.) through desktop research and interviews with relevant parties in each location.
