Another not-so-happy #WildlifeWednesday- our Agaves are dying!😱🌵🌿 Today, we're sharing about our National Flower, the Dagger Log (Agave karatto)! The Dagger Log is a remarkable symbol of Antigua and Barbuda, reaching up to 7 meters tall and thriving in our dry forests. This striking plant is important for local wildlife, offering an essential habitat and resources 🙏 However, it faces a significant threat from the Agave Snout Weevil🪲 . This invasive beetle burrows into the plant to lay its eggs, causing severe damage and introducing a terminal disease😨. As a result, many plants die before they can flower, leading to a drop in their numbers😔. This issue has so far been observed in the Nelson's Dockyard area and on Green Island🏝️ The decline of Dagger Logs in these locations can negatively impact the wildlife that rely on them. Our prickly foes🌵are a water source!💦😱 Happy Tuesday everyone!✨ While monitoring the snakes 🐍 is important, it is also crucial to monitor the habitats where they live. Antiguan Racers are often found in/around vegetation🌱 on the offshore islands🏝️, especially near Agave plants. Another week, another census recap!🐍 Last Friday our team wrapped up the last bit of our Antiguan Racer Census on Green Island!🏝️ Here, you’ll find the world’s largest population of our critically endangered Antiguan Racer snakes🐍 The snakes were reintroduced to the island in 2002.
