PNG minister Jimmy Maladina charged with domestic assault in Sydney after police called to complaint in Bondi

A minister in Papua New Guinea's government has been arrested in Sydney and charged with an alleged domestic assault offence.

The ABC understands Jimmy Maladina, PNG's petroleum minister, was charged with domestic assault on Saturday morning after being arrested in Bondi.

Police were called to an address in Imperial Avenue in Bondi at about 10am after receiving reports of a domestic dispute.

Officers spoke to a 31-year-old woman with facial injuries, allegedly as a result of an altercation with a 58-year-old man known to her.

The man was arrested, and taken to Waverley police station where he was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

In a statement, Mr Maladina said he was "fully cooperating with the authorities".

"I understand the gravity of this situation and the concerns it raises," he said. 

"As a public servant, I hold myself to high standards of conduct, both personally and professionally.

"I want to make it clear that violence in any form is unacceptable, and I am committed to handling this situation with integrity and transparency."

He was granted conditional bail and is due to face court on Thursday.
