Cult Girls based on a true story, tells the story of Talia and her friends as they struggle with growing suspicions that their faith is a patriarchal religious cult. It's a story of tremendous courage and female empowerment as Talia as her friends successfully free themselves told through a feminist lens with cautionary humor. Talia discusses the adversity faced as a young female raised in a cult that values its men over its women, meanwhile trying to find herself in the middle of several peer pressures. Rosa talks about how she was forced into a loveless marriage and struggles to find the means to escape. Sandy and Rochelle hope to fade out of their elder’s attention while still trying to maintain a successful marriage. These four women were born, raised and married in the cult and they each have a different path consisting of their own individual passions, desires and goals.

Cult Girls has an educational backdrop of the harsh treatment that these peculiar individuals knocking on your door don’t want you to know. It lightly touches on their shunning policies, lack of acknowledgment of modern medicine, and training its members to be martyrs that sacrifice their families, as well as an aversion to education and political processes. The healing journey is the discovery that there is hope for a better world, by realizing with their feminine energy they can make a change for the better in each a unique way.

Cult Girls won (3) 1st Place Gold Awards in the Human Relations Indie Book Awards in 2023.

Cult Girls won the Pencraft 1st Place Gold Award in 2022.

"
Cult Girls has taken unmatched courage and determination to write so openly about life as Jehovah's Witness. Repercussions for speaking out against the church are real and the author clearly understands the impact her work will have on both members and those who may be recruited.. Her story is a poignant one told in the form of a graphic novel and based on a true story." Literary Titan 2023 1st Place Gold Award

"I loved what the author was trying to do with this book. I am personally no fan of the Jehovah's Witness cult... Fantastic to see an author trying to warn people about cults. And not in a dull way! Fun, colourful, sexy - a very difficult approach to a difficult subject."

"Natalie's "
Cult Girls" introduces a sassy and colorful cast of characters interwoven with a classic collection of these triggering JW phrases like "announced", "marked", "the current magazines", "two witnesses", "stumbled", "privileges", "worldly men", "earthly hope", "treacherous heart", "part on the assembly", "witness to him", "good standing", "scripturally free", "local needs", "publisher card", "loose conduct", and many more.. These expressions are like a fingerprint that identifies the author as a genuine ex-cult member who lived and breathed life as a Jehovah's Witness, with all the restrictions and repressions. Natalie gives the world snippets of what it's like to be a female JW in a religion controlled entirely by men.... but Natalie has brought the world the first beautifully illustrated graphic novel. It's a must-have!" -Mark J. O'Donnell, journalist & Activist, Crusades Season 1.

Literally unreadable (printing/font) - but beautifully illustrated
I had to send this book back because although I loved it and the illustrations are stunning there seemed to be a printing or font setting issue with the copy I received. I literally couldn’t read it without risking a migraine. It’s a shame because there’s obviously a lot of love gone into the book. I did wonder after looking at the back cover whether the graphic novel was self published, so that these issues haven’t been through a proof-reader or editor or if I just happened to get the one dodgy copy that’s ever been printed. The back cover made me think it was self published because the paragraph setting and font didn’t seem like it had been done by a professional, it wasn’t accessible to some readers because of the placement of the settings. The book itself looks beautiful, well illustrated. I haven’t read or or looked at all of the pages properly because I needed to return the book so I can’t adequately critique the storyline. There seem to be a lot of characters to remember but it looked as though people’s stories were told individually at first so it may not have been confusing to read/remember. It looked really refreshing to have something that could be shown in a different format to the usual paperback novels, accessible to adults and kids, leaving adults feeling less alone and kids having a better understanding of why there may be estrangement and religious differences in their family. Obviously I don’t know this because I can’t read whether it’s child appropriate or not, as I’m sending it back.I like that there are different body shapes and ethnicities represented, however it was a bit of a shame that they were the props to the blonde barbie princess type character, a bit like old school Disney cartoons. It reminded me of Destiny’s Child album covers back in the day where Beyoncé was always front and centre and the other girls just were there to make up the numbers til she went solo.I was really impressed that the book had 4 awards but I hadn't heard of them then when I checked them out I realised there is this whole thing atm where you pay an entry fee and your book gets reviewed, some awards charge per x pages and some dish out awards every month. However it looks beautiful, has a serious subject matter rarely explored in an accessible medium, so of course it deserves awards… just as long as ppl can read it!I couldn’t contact the seller as it’s just Amazon Prime (I think it’s self published) which is a shame because I’d wanted to have known if my book was a mistake or not, ideally swapping it for a readable one. Now I don’t know if it’s the way all of the books are printed or just one.Either way, mixed review - but stunning illustrations in colour and the author has bravely gone there with a sensitive subject that will leave her open to a lot of abuse. Hopefully I can change my review to 4/5 stars on my second purchase. I def want to give it a second chance.

Such a creative way to tell your personal experience in the cult. This is such a good book for someone who is curious about what ex-JWs have/had to deal with when sadly they still have relatives involved with the cult.

I was able to relate to the author's experience, as I personally decided to part ways with this cult a few years ago. Love how it makes it very clear that they are lovely people when they want to convert you, but as soon as you "rebel" you become their worse enemy.

While reading this book it really made me think how was I ever involved with these people and how toxic they are. I'm so relived and thankful that I was able to leave, and my family also decided to leave with me.

An innovative, bright, glossy and funny take on an otherwise harrowing experience of living as and then leaving a very controlling cult called Jehovah's Witnesses. Many of us can recall the same awkwardness and confusion of leaving this strange lifestyle.
Natalie handles some dark subjects with great humour without glossing over the trauma and the general confusion, loss of personality and loneliness of coming out of this controlling cult. The graphics are bright and refreshingly beautiful and so well designed and drawn.
Such a unique project. Very well accomplished

This book might be about the negative effects of growing up a Jehovah’s Witness but it’s funny and accessible, written for the YA market, and I imagine acts as a great friend to those who are struggling with growing up in the shadow of this cult and others. It’s an important book and empowering book for young girls.

This is an incredible resource. Not only has Natalie been able to effectively portray the loved experience of some inside the Jehovah’s Witnesses, she has made it accessible to many outside using this beautiful art-form. The education the reader gains is invaluable and it should not be underestimated how much we need this in the world. Thank you Natalie.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing and touching story about life as a JW
Reviewed in Canada on 29 August 2022
I absolutely adored everything about this book, from the story to the artwork!

The point-of-view from sisters is not often shared because the organization is a very patriarchal-based religion (cult) so it was refreshing to read a story from this perspective.

Thank you for sharing your story! I am sure it will help many others with their escape, or better yet, prevent them from joining in the first place!

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR ANYONE IN A CULT!!!
Reviewed in the United States on 24 March 2022
Growing up as a JW from an early age, this was sadly the only life I knew and believed. It has affected every aspect of my life being brainwashed by the JW cult. I served as a pioneer and married an elder. I kept waiting for Armageddon which was supposed to bring forth a paradise earth where I could finally be happy and live my life to the fullest. It never came. What a beautiful book that exposes Jehovah’s Witnesses as a cult and discusses their beliefs and teachings in depth. It’s shockingly accurate in details. I hope many who are on the fence read this and get out!! As this book describes, there is so much happiness and love outside of this cult! A touching true story that shows how beautiful life is with freedom from exiting a cult.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's colorful, it's sassy, & it's an accurate pictorial essay of Jehovah's Witness life. Excellent!
Reviewed in the United States on 6 August 2022
First, I'd like to say that when Amazon asks "Add a written review" - they couldn't know how triggering this phrase is to a former Jehovah's Witness. As children, we grew up attending 5 meetings per week and had periodic "written reviews" to ingrain into our brains everything we had learned in the past weeks, question and answer style.

Natalie's "Cult Girls" introduces a sassy and colorful cast of characters interwoven with a classic collection of these triggering JW phrases like "announced", "marked", "the current magazines", "two witnesses", "stumbled", "privileges", "worldly men", "earthly hope", "treacherous heart", "part on the assembly", "witness to him", "good standing", "scripturally free", "local needs", "publisher card", "loose conduct", and many more.

These expressions are like a fingerprint that identifies the author as a genuine ex-cult member who lived and breathed life as a Jehovah's Witness, with all the restrictions and repressions. Natalie gives the world snippets of what it's like to be a female JW in a religion controlled entirely by men.

There are many great ex-Jehovah's Witness books out there, but Natalie has brought the world the first beautifully illustrated graphic novel. It's a must-have!

This book is a collection of scenes that could take place in any Jehovah’s Witnesses woman’s life. If you were one are still are one, you will laugh at every single scene in the book because you have seen it happen in every Kingdom Hall. I loved every story. The drawings are wonderfully done too!
