Acerca de

Agustin Matteri, is an expert in Environmental Law and Policy, with proven sound capacities to integrate multi stakeholders interests to develop robust climate strategies and financing portfolios. He counts with relevant experience working for the UNEP Climate Change Unit of the Latin America and the Caribbean Office (+USD 150 million mobilized) and the Ministry of Environment of Argentina. He was the Programme Officer for coordinating UN-REDD activities in Latin America and the Caribbean for UNEP (2021-22), where he performed as Task Manager for the biggest UNEP project worldwide: Paraguay GCF REDD+ results-based payments (USD 50M).

He has performed duties as the G20 Focal Point for the Presidency of Argentina (2018) and for UNFCCC COP25 Presidency of Chile (2019), and the XXII Forum of Ministers of Environment of LAC for the Climate Change Decision under the Presidency of Barbados (2021). He has achieved the political buy-in, the endorsement and the drafting of some of the most relevant projects of UNEP: a USD 25M project under the GEF7 Sustainable Cities Impact Program for Argentina; 8 CBIT national projects approved by the GEF Secretariat for a total of USD12M (Costa Rica, Chile, Peru, Honduras, Argentina, Panama, Dominican Republic, Antigua and Barbuda); 3 National Strategies on Sustainable Mobility (Colombia, Panamá and Argentina); among others related to nature-based solutions in cities and food producers (City Adapt and MEbA Platforms).

He has also co-created and coordinated the MOVE Initiative to promoting sustainable mobility deployment in Latin America, and the Center for Climate Ambition & Transparency for NDCs and LTSs design and tracking, providing technical assistance and financial access for the development of MRV systems in Latin America and Caribbean countries.

    We have created a management scheme for post-consumer household waste to try to
    mitigate three core situations: from 50% to 70% of Argentinean municipalities still practice
    open dumping (Ministry of Environment of Argentina, 2012), our landfills placed at big cities
    are almost collapsed and, above all, there is a serious lack of awareness in Argentinean
    consumers.
    To involve producers into this challenging project, we focused mainly on branding strategies
    for them to see a business value in becoming our sponsors, internalize environmental costs
    and being part of the change.
    The scheme consists basically on green points located at places of massive circulation of
    consumers (shopping malls, public parks, massive events) run by in-situ operators. These
    operators are specially trained to: sort recyclable household waste, inform consumers about
    recyclability and sustainability patterns of the waste stream brought by them, quality, hygiene
    and security standards for the materials to be accepted, the importance of sorting at home,
    and the know-how to manage our software for awarding with prizes responsible consumers
    and for tracking and tracing the life-cycle of the materials received. Through the in-situ
    operators we also address social inclusion of former informal workers and jobless people.
    Results are becoming tangible as we are recycling more and more material. As we will see in
    Figure H, and just for example, the tons recycled on April 2016 soared up to 40 compared to
    the 11.5 last year´s same month.
