Ever wondered if unilateral or bilateral BCI (bone conduction implant) users benefit more from their devices? Canale et al. analyzed the binaural benefits and subjective satisfaction for seven patients with bilateral conductive or mixed hearing loss using bilateral BCIs and compared the results to seven patients with monaural conductive hearing loss using a BONEBRIDGE BCI. Key findings included: • Bilateral BCI users had more advantages in speech perception in noise, sound localization, and higher subjective satisfaction. • Unilateral BCI users “achieved good results in terms of binaural hearing” and had no contraindication for implantation. Structure preservation requires electrodes that can be placed entirely in the scala tympani. If the electrode array deviates into the scala vestibuli, this could affect nerve function, destroy residual hearing, and prevent your patients from benefiting from new technologies. Stiffer electrode arrays—including both perimodiolar and some lateral wall arrays—are far more likely to penetrate and damage the delicate membranes between the scala tympani and scala vestibuli. In contrast, MED-EL’s soft, flexible electrodes are proven to consistently enable scala tympani placement, with an average scala tympani insertion rate of nearly 100%.
