🌟 UN/Austria Symposium 2024 - It's a Wrap! 🌟 We’re thrilled to announce the successful conclusion of the 30th #UNAustriaSymposium, celebrating three decades of impactful discussions and collaborations! With over 1,600 participants from 100+ countries and 55% female speakers, our 2-day event brought together a diverse and engaged community. 🌍🎉 This year's Symposium focused on leveraging space-based technologies for climate action by providing practical insights into user engagement, capacity building, and funding opportunities. We highlighted the crucial roles of government and intergovernmental organizations, with a special spotlight on Indonesia's experience, which demonstrated the importance of robust national policies and ecosystems in transforming technical projects into sustainable services. Participants left equipped with actionable practices and inspired to make their #SpaceForClimate initiatives self-sustainable. Highlights from the Symposium include: 💡 Insights from successful space-for-climate initiatives that prioritized inclusive user engagement and innovative capacity building, fostering end-user ownership and robust partnerships. 📈 Practical advice from investors and financial institutions on attracting funding to sustainably scale space-for-climate initiatives. 📜 Discussions on the critical need for cohesive national and international policies to support stakeholders and ensure the successful implementation of space-for-climate initiatives for the benefit of all. In addition to rich discussions and networking, participants explored the historic city centre of Graz, a #UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Symposium in a memorable setting. 🏛️✨ A heartfelt thank you to all our attendees and speakers for their contributions. Saturday is International Moon Day, an opportunity to celebrate our closest celestial neighbour and its significance for Earth and humanity. The Moon has been a source of wonder and inspiration throughout human history, playing a vital role in our natural world as well as in scientific and technological progress. Without the Moon, Earth's climate would be much less stable. International Moon Day commemorates the first human landing on the Moon on 20 July 1969, and aims to raise awareness of the importance of sustainable lunar exploration. The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) supports the international community through the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) to promote the safe and sustainable exploration of the Moon. Happy (or Merry?) International Moon Day! 🌕Today, we celebrate our closest celestial neighbour, the Moon, and its significance for Earth and humanity. From ancient myths to modern science, the Moon has been a source of wonder and inspiration throughout human history, playing a vital role in our natural world as welll as scientific and technological progress. 🌖 Without the Moon, Earth's climate would be much less stable. 🌍 The Moon's gravitational pull is essential in creating tides and stabilizing our planet's axial tilt, contributing to a relatively stable climate. 🌌 International Moon Day, as recognised by the UN General Assembly in 2021, commemorates the first human landing on the Moon on July 20, 1969, and promotes awareness of sustainable lunar exploration. The Moon's exploration is crucial for scientific discovery, technological advancement, and even future human settlements. 🌐 The international community, through the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and #UNOOSA, plays a crucial role in promoting the safe and sustainable exploration and utilisation of the Moon. Collaboration ensures that lunar activities are conducted sustainably. What are some of the recent milestones? 1/ UNOOSA recently hosted the first-ever UN Conference on Sustainable Lunar Activities on 18 June. The conference brought together the NASA-led Artemis Accords, the Chinese/Russian-led International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) and the private sector for the first time to exchange ideas on information-sharing, interoperability, regulatory frameworks and predictability, and promote transparency in lunar activities. Artemis and ILRS aim to return humans to the Moon by the end of this decade. 2/ In 2024, the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, COPUOS, has never been more relevant. Only 3 weeks ago, COPUOS took one giant leap to promote these ideals, through the establishment of the Action Team on Lunar Activities Consultation (ATLAC). Through the deliberation and negotiation of expert-informed recommendations over the next two to three years, ATLAC will enhance global cooperation and coordination in lunar activities. #InternationalMoonDay #Moon #LunarExploration #SpaceScience #UNOOSA #COPUOS2024

👨🚀🚀 We had the honor of interviewing Charlie Duke, former NASA astronaut and the 10th man to walk on the moon, for the first UN Conference on Sustainable Lunar Activities, which brought together stakeholders from across the globe to discuss international cooperation, as well as technical and legal challenges to lunar exploration. That's not all. 🔍 At June's session of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, a significant step was taken to promote these ideals: the establishment of the Action Team on Lunar Activities Consultation (ATLAC). 👥 ATLAC aims to enhance global cooperation and coordination in lunar activities. It will develop guidelines and best practices to ensure that the exploration and use of the Moon are conducted safely and sustainably. #InternationalMoonDay #IMD2024 #SustainableLunarActivities #LunarExploration #CharlieDuke #ATLAC #COPUOS2024 #UNOOSA
