🌟 2024 marks 50 years of the NAIDOC Committee. Over the past five decades, the NAIDOC committee has been pivotal in shaping NAIDOC Week, an annual event honouring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people's history, culture, and achievements.✨ NAIDOC Week’s roots can be traced back to the 1938 Day of Mourning protest, which highlighted the injustices faced by Aboriginal Australians. Originally known as 'Aborigines Day' in the 1940s and early 1950s, it evolved into a celebration in 1955. In 1974, it became the week-long event we recognise today, organised by the National Aborigines Day Observance Committee (NADOC). In 1991, the name was changed to NAIDOC to include Torres Strait Islander peoples. Today, NAIDOC Week is a vibrant celebration featuring cultural performances, art exhibitions, community festivals, and educational activities. The NAIDOC Committee has always been integral in choosing themes that resonate with the community and spotlight key issues. This year’s theme, “Keep the fire burning! Blak, loud and proud,” reflects both the legacy and the ongoing struggles and triumphs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. Join us in commemorating 50 years of NAIDOC and keeping the fire burning! 🌟 Proud moment alert 🌟 Our CEO, Fiona Mackenzie, recently participated in the #CEOSleepout, an initiative by the St Vincent de Paul Society Australia to raise awareness around homelessness. Every night, thousands of Australians face the harsh reality of homelessness. With the recent increase in cost of living and housing affordability, the number of Australians sleeping rough has skyrocketed, with the number in NSW increasing by 35%.* Last night, Fiona joined other leaders in Sydney for the Vinnies CEO Sleepout, experiencing an evening outside to ‘bring home the realities of homelessness.’ The cause aims to shed light on the importance of supporting our fellow Australians in need. Support Fiona and the Vinnies CEO sleepout by heading to the cause’s website: bit.ly/3VROPg0. So far, $8 million (and counting) has been raised for various homelessness initiatives. *bit.ly/3VxhJ3x #CEOSleepout #HomelessnessAwareness #VinniesCEO #Homelessness #LeadershipInAction #CommunitySupport

Loving the NAIDOC Week Poster! Artist Deb Belyea has perfectly captured this year’s theme - “Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud”. The artwork ‘Urapun Muy’ depicts the hands of ancestors stoking a flame. As Belya states, “The linear detail shows the energy and power as cultural knowledge is transferred from our ancestors to us today. Culture is the fire that gives us knowledge, wisdom, and purpose.” The annual NAIDOC Poster competition has become a national icon since its beginnings in 1967, when the National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) created its first poster. National NAIDOC Week celebrations will be held from 7 – 14 July 2024. For more information on the latest news and events, head to the NAIDOC website: bit.ly/4ewt0dk

Hey Fellas. It’s Men’s Health Week again, and we’re just checking in on you. In fact, this year’s theme is Men’s Health Checks. We know that men are sometimes pressured to ‘suck it up’ and be the stoic one but deep down, Men have feelings too. Men are also less likely to seek healthcare, especially mental healthcare. 1 in 2 men will experience a mental health disorder in their lifetime.* Despite this, around 40% of health conditions and early deaths among Australian men can be prevented by healthier habits.** This is an opportunity to think about what it means to be a man... let’s challenge the stereotype, avoid bottling it up and support healthy expressions of emotion. Checking in with each other is a great start. Be sure to get your checkups and check in with yourself! We provide a low-key and confidential space to have a chat. "Empathy is simply listening, holding space, withholding judgement, emotionally connecting, and communicating that incredibly healing message of 'You're not alone.'" - Brené Brown Peer support is a powerful thing, and in the workplace, mental health discussions amongst workers are crucial in reducing the stigma around accessing counselling. Our Ambassador Program aims to cultivate openness in the workplace by empowering employees to become mental health advocates. Nominated by HR, Ambassadors are the champions for mental health awareness at their workplace. With training and support, these employees are able to assist colleagues in accessing resources and seeking counselling when in need. 🌟💼 Visit our Ambassadors Program page to discover how it can positively impact mental health in your workplace: bit.ly/3R2TY1W . . . #AmbassadorProgram #MentalHealthMatters #PeerSupport #WorkplaceWellbeing #MentalHealthAwareness #EAP

National Reconciliation Week marks the successful 1967 Referendum and the High Court Mabo decision, respectively. The 27th of May to 3rd of June is a time for all Australians to learn and reflect on our shared history. As an organisation committed to improving mental health in the workplace, we encourage conversations that amplify First Nation's voices and support growth, understanding, and reconciliation within organisations. This year’s theme, 'Now More Than Ever', is a “reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will —and must —continue” (reconciliation.org). Reconciliation is not a destination; it's an ongoing process that requires continuous commitment and active participation. For news, local events and more information, head to the Reconciliation Australia website: bit.ly/4dW8geO . . . #ReconciliationDay #Respect #Community #Inclusion #FirstNations #AccessEAP #NationalReconciliationWeek #InclusiveWorkplaces #AccessEAP #nowmorethanever #NRW2024
