About us
ACD is the advocacy service for children with disability and their families in Victoria. We are a not-for-profit organisation led by and for families of children with disability. Our vision is an inclusive community where children with disability and their families thrive. For more than 40 years we have supported families across Victoria with children from birth to 18 with any disability. We help families gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to advocate for their children. Our work means we hear directly from thousands of families every year. We amplify their voices and experiences through systemic advocacy to improve the lives of children with disability.

A Day With No Words is an engaging picture book about a family that communicates without spoken language, just as their autistic son does. The author, Tiffany Hammond, is an autistic mother of two autistic sons, and the story highlights the bond between mother and child, following them on a day when they use a tablet to communicate with others. The colourful illustrations by Kate Cosgrove make it a great book to share with young readers. 👇 https://lnkd.in/gUexPaD5? #PictureBook #AutismAwareness #NonverbalCommunication #AutisticAuthors #ChildrensBooks #DiverseBooks #InclusiveReading

The ACD Board held its annual workshop last night to talk about strategy, risk, and opportunities. The board discussed the implications of the NDIS Review, new NDIS legislation, and the Disability Royal Commission for ACD's work and the lives of children and families. 80% of the ACD Board are parents of children with disability and 30% are people with disability. This amazing group of volunteers share their lived experience and professional expertise to ensure the good governance of ACD. #NDISreview #goodgovernance #disabilityadvocacy

For children with disability and their families, inclusion begins with playgrounds and playgroups and continue into after-school activities, sport, and recreation. The ACD Local Government Action Plan outlines ways local councils can ensure their communities are places where children with disability and their families feel a sense of belonging. We have shared the action plan with the 79 Victorian local councils in the lead up to the 2024 local government elections. https://lnkd.in/gySYTSNM #LGA #inclusionmatters #disabilityadvocacy

Thank you to the Minister for Children and Minister for Disability Lizzie Blandthorn and Parliamentary Secretary Iwan Walters for hosting a Raising Children in Victoria roundtable with families raising children with disability. Families shared powerful stories of advocating for their children and families across healthcare, getting a diagnosis, NDIS and education. Families also talked about the importance of peer support and the role of family-led organisations, like ACD, in helping families feel empowered and supported on their journey. Thank you to incredible families for speaking up📢 #DisabilityAdvocacy #RaisingChildrenInVictoria

OK, let's talk toileting! 🚽🙂 Most of us agree that toilet training children can be stressful. When your child has a disability or developmental delay, it can be even more challenging, as they often need additional support, and some will need continence support throughout their life. But don't despair, there's a lot of free support and information to help you on your child’s toileting journey. Please read our latest blog to find a list of great links and resources to help you and your family. 👇 https://lnkd.in/dk_WKsNu #ToiletTraining #ChildDevelopment #DisabilitySupport #ContinenceCare
