We’re here for community health, inclusion and HIV responses for people of diverse sexualities and genders.

About us

We’re a New South Wales based health promotion organisation specialising in HIV prevention, HIV support and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) health. Established in 1985 as the AIDS Council of NSW, we’re here to end HIV transmission among gay and homosexually active men, and promote the lifelong health of LGBTI people and people with HIV. Our head office is in Sydney, we have offices in five regional locations and we provide services throughout NSW. We’re primarily funded by the NSW Government through the NSW Ministry of Health and our work forms an integral part of the NSW Government’s HIV Strategy. We provide a comprehensive range of evidence based programs and services as well as collaborating with all levels of government to ensure our work is supported by effective policy settings. People choose to work at ACON because they believe in what we do. ACON employees get a great sense of accomplishment from working here and most strongly identify with ACON’s goals and objectives. ACON provides employees with a number of learning experiences ranging from courses and seminars, to e-learning and conferences as well as on-the-job learning. ACON also assists employee learning through Study Assistance. We offer employees a supportive workplace through flexible work practices and benefits. ACON is committed to building an organisation that represents the variety of our rich and diverse communities. All people in the workplace deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. We are an Equal Opportunity Employer and encourage people with HIV, in particular, to apply. Honour 2024: The ACON President’s Award, bestowed annually to those whose community service have made a significant impact to the lives of people in LGBTQ communities in NSW, will this year be dedicated to co-founder of The Bookshop Darlinghurst, Les McDonald, who opened the store in 1982 with Wayne Harrison. ACON President Dr Justin Koonin said: “Les’ contributions to rainbow communities through the running of The Bookshop Darlinghurst for 42 years has been nothing short of remarkable. That he opened The Bookshop while it was still illegal to be gay in New South Wales is even more inspiring; homosexuality was decriminalised in the state in 1984. “Throughout this time, The Bookshop would become a safe space for many in our communities, as well as a place to find information, support and connection. “Les has also been deeply committed to partnership and community development, particularly during the most difficult years of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. And Les has also enabled a space for our communities’ stories to be told, including at times when it was difficult to do so. “We commend Les for his tireless efforts that have not only allowed rainbow voices to be heard but have also played a crucial role in supporting LGBTQ communities over many years.” Thank you Les for your service! We’re excited to reveal journalist, broadcaster and author Jason Om as the host of Honour 2024. It will be Jason’s second time fronting the awards night, having hosted the event in 2023. “I’m flattered and excited to be called into action again,” Jason says “Hosting last year was a blast, and I always have a fun time at the Awards, so I couldn’t say no. It’s a nice feeling to be welcomed back.” Speaking on the importance of the Honour Awards, Jason says the event provides the LGBTQ community in NSW an opportunity to come together and unite in the face of increasing hostility from wider society. “I think this year has been tough for our community, we all felt it, so events like the Honour Awards are a chance for us to look back and reflect but also to pull together and find joy in what we have managed to achieve despite the odds,” he says. “Most of all it’s a celebration of who we are, and of those in our community who have made a difference.” Be part of an extraordinary celebration at the 2024 Honour Awards on Wednesday 18 September at Doltone House Hyde Park in Sydney. Tickets on sale now! Early bird pricing ends 31 August. Go to ➡ https://lnkd.in/deb5ENN6
