Thankful for the 3x National Industry Researcher PhD Scholarships we received at AgriWebb with University of Technology Sydney. Important research to help improve farming sustainability and efficiency.
We’re excited to share that we successfully launched three individual projects in a single day at University of Technology Sydney in collaboration with AgriWebb, the global leader in digital livestock management. These industry-focused PhD projects are dedicated to tackling significant challenges in agriculture, including livestock productivity, sustainability and biosecurity. All 3 PhD students were also previously UTS Software Engineering students who interned at AgriWebb. All three PhD students Ayush Kanwal, Alex Trobec, and Islam Rezk are excited to be part of the program. As are the UTS academics Dr Wei Liu, Dr Daniel Ramp and Dr Luke Mathieson. Dr Kenny Sabir, Vice President of Research at AgriWebb and Industry Supervisor of the 3 PhDs, emphasises “This research will empower the livestock industry to enhance productivity, sustainability, and biosecurity. By leveraging machine learning on data from 60 million heads of livestock, combined with satellite insights and seasonal climate forecasts, livestock producers will better manage risk with advanced planning tools designed to drive smarter, more resilient operations. AgriWebb is excited by the symbiotic relationship these PhDs will have in enhancing the outputs of our flagship $7.5m research project Foragecaster with the Food Agility CRC, also involving UTS to help develop a grazing planner and sustainability metrics report that takes into account seasonal forecasts. AgriWebb is committed to bridging the gap between academia and industry, addressing real problems through dedicated research and giving solutions back to our 14,000 farmers through easy-to-use tools they use daily. Leveraging UTS’s renowned expertise in machine learning, sustainability, and graph theory, as well as AgriWebb's industry leadership in livestock farm management, this project epitomises a collaborative approach that bridges the gap between academia and industry. About Foragecaster Foragecaster is an R&D project at AgriWebb, in collaboration with Food Agility CRC, Cibo Labs, FLINTpro, MLA, University of Technology Sydney, and QUT (Queensland University of Technology). It utilizes machine learning on data from over 60 million animals and 30 million records to enhance livestock supply and sustainability forecasting. The initiative provides a 6-month probabilistic forecast, integrating biophysical models with real-time remote sensing and weather data, alongside decision-support tools, a grazing planner, and sustainability metrics tailored for Australian farmers. 🔗 Want to learn more about the National Industry PhD Program or thinking of applying? A must-read by our Chief Product Officer Philip Chan discussing the nuances of data needed for livestock sustainability programs. Our product and engineering teams have been working closely with MRV and technical assistance providers to develop the first carbon insetting programs on grazing lands in the US and Australia, producing claimable outcomes for companies working towards their 2030 climate targets. Each program has to be built on a solid foundation of quality data, accessibility for farmers and ranchers, and GHG modeling that can account for the various practice changes that can be deployed in different geographies. Our THIRD annual State of the Farmer report compiled the voices of almost 1,000 farmers and ranchers from around the world! Curious what they had to say about their priorities and concerns, and thoughts on technology adoption, land stewardship practices and industry trends? Here are 🖐 powerful takeaways: 📈 Soaring input costs are a growing concern, globally. Around the world, livestock producers are feeling the squeeze of rising input costs, with over 40% of survey respondents naming it their top concern. 🤔 Farmers and ranchers are playing "the carbon waiting game." Sustainability and carbon-focused programmes are seeing increased participation, especially in the UK where nearly half (49.7%) of respondents are involved. However, participation is more tentative in Australia (18.7%) and the US (22.4%). The main reason farmers and ranchers gave for not joining programmes is that they are waiting to see how the markets develop. 🏛 Producers feel ignored by governments. A stark disconnect exists between livestock producers and their governments. Only a small fraction of respondents in the US (12.2%), UK (3.9%), and Australia (7.1%) boasted a crystal-clear understanding of their government’s livestock industry policies. 🇦🇺 Aussie farmers are agtech trailblazers. Australian farmers are at the forefront of technology adoption. Over 80% use AgTech for record-keeping, with a strong preference for AgriWebb (over 60%) and other farm management software. 🌱 Grazing management is a major key to success. Optimising grazing planning is a leading priority in 2024. In the US, in the wake of severe drought, 44% of farmers consider it a top priority. That compares to 28% in the UK (28%) and 30% in Australia. Want to download the full State of the Farmer report?
