Addressing a packed room at COTA’s ‘Governance in Aged Care: Governing Through Change’ conference in Sydney last week, Apollo Care’s CEO Stephen Becsi OAM discussed the increasingly challenging governance landscape and how Apollo Care is responding. “Governance is now highly specialised,” he told delegates. “Like many aged care providers, Apollo Care is currently regulated by six different national pieces of legislation. Even experienced directors need to significantly upskill, and the biggest burden is on the smallest providers, which are often in regional Australia. “Our innovative operating model is one of our core strengths,” he explained. “We strengthen the capability and efficiency of each aged care community with specialist support so they have a level of expertise normally only enjoyed by larger providers. “This model ensures Apollo Care always has the expertise to meet all legislative requirements. “First, we outsource company secretary services to Australian Company Secretary to ensure we’re fully compliant with ACNC and ASIC legislation. “Second, our highly experienced Chief Governance Officer ensures Apollo Care is always fully compliant with all aspects of the Aged Care Act. These specialists collaborate to create and maintain a comprehensive organisational governance policy framework that specifically supports all legislative requirements. “Third, Apollo Care has curated an exceptional board of directors with deep experience in complex regulatory environments. “As a consequence, Apollo Care is now being approached by well-run facilities that are fully care-compliant and financially sound; they just don’t have the depth of expertise or capacity to deal with the increasing burden of aged care approved provider compliance.” #AgedCare #CorporateGovernance #RoyalCommissionIntoAgedCare #AgedCareLegislation #CompanySecretaryAustralia

A milestone was reached yesterday at Groundwater Lodge in Maryborough as we celebrated the opening of the final six of 30 new beds at the community. By early 2025, Apollo Care will have spent $4 million transforming Groundwater Lodge from a partly-shut facility in danger of closing into a vibrant, thriving community with near-full occupancy, top governance and compliance, and an award-winning staff wellbeing program. Apollo Care acquired the community in 2021 from the Presbyterian Church of QLD, along with sister properties PresCare Yaralla Place in Maryborough, and Alexandra Gardens in Rockhampton. CEO Stephen Becsi OAM says: “We knew the vital role PresCare and Groundwater Lodge played in the Maryborough community, so we immediately rolled out a program of crucial behind-the-scenes improvements to finances, compliance and governance. “At the same time, we began renovations across the site to improve buildings and grounds and to bring new beds online. We’ve specifically selected furniture and furnishings in the bedrooms, dining and living areas to create a real sense of home.” Apollo Care also developed a 20-bed specialist Dementia Support Unit to meet local demand; completely upgraded the community’s kitchen; and created a fresh food program where all meals, including texture-modified diets, are created onsite and residents are consulted on the menu to ensure they’re receiving the food they love. Meanwhile, the community is piloting a mobile ‘one tool device’ – loaded with powerful programs including access to every resident’s medical, care and lifestyle programs – which is delivering impressive results for staff plus improving organisational performance and resident outcomes. Jinto George, Residential Services Manager at Groundwater Lodge, has worked closely with staff on the rollout of the device. “Everyone reports it’s easy, convenient and improves efficiency and accuracy.” “We also know that when staff spend more ‘soft skill’ time with residents, it increases quality-of-life for residents and job satisfaction for workers. This not only transforms care for residents at Groundwater Lodge, it also helps us attract and retain great workers. “Staffing is the number one issue nationwide in aged care, and this is one part of our success in attracting 25 new workers in the past six months. Another key element is our ability to offer accommodation onsite at Apollo Care’s 24 adjacent two-bedroom units. Staff have joined us from places as diverse as Zimbabwe, the UK, Canada, Fiji and the Solomon Islands, plus from interstate and intrastate. “Between Apollo Care’s significant investments in finances, compliance and governance infrastructure, refurbishments, technical innovations and our ‘staff village’, we’ve created a successful, happy and nurturing environment here for everyone.” Watch Channel 7 News Report here: https://ow.ly/jLpa50SlmHX

Our CEO, Stephen Becsi OAM has enjoyed a busy few days in Singapore at the 12th Asia Pacific Eldercare Innovation Awards 2024. In addition to Stephen being a panellist discussing investment trends driven by rising health longevity and ageing demographics, he represented Apollo Care being named a finalist in the category of ‘Innovation of the year – Productivity – Employee Wellbeing: Best implementation that demonstrates improvement in employee wellbeing’. The judges were very impressed with our ‘Work-Rite’ employee wellbeing program which creates a culture of hopefulness by focusing on the many things our people do well – big and small, day-in-day-out. Stephen showed how improving workforce wellbeing leads to improved resident wellbeing and how, together, they support business improvement and profitability. ‘Work-Rite’ is a key component of our strategy to attract and retain great aged care workers. So today – and every day – we salute our team! #ApolloCareAlliance #ApolloCare #AgeingAsia #WorldAgeingFestival #AgedCare #ResidentialAgedCare #AustralianAgedCare #Innovation #Eldercare #Turnarounds #Productivity #AgedCareAwards #StephenBecsi #AgedCareSector #EmployeeWellbeing #Work-Rite #AgedCareWorkforce

Will it change the marketplace for small operators? Will it drive new products and services? Tomorrow, Stephen will explain how small, regional operators can resource to achieve efficiencies and competencies to match capital city operators.
