FINDING YOUR PLACE IN THE DEFENCE INDUSTRY Meet Loren, a Communications Advisor at ASC who sat down with the team at Defence SA to share her career journey to date. It’s common to imagine the defence industry is filled with engineers and trades, but Loren is proof of the diversity of roles which are also crucial for building Australia’s defence industry workforce. Loren’s focus on events and visits at ASC makes for a fast-paced job where she puts her meticulous organisational skills to the test. “No two days are the same, from handling VIP visits, coordinating external events and exhibitions to handling PPE and merchandising requirements. “The South Australian defence industry continues to carve career paths at every level. You don’t need to be an engineer or a tradesperson to get involved. If you have the skill set and you are willing to learn, then this is the place for you.” Read more of Loren’s story below and find out more about careers at ASC here: https://lnkd.in/g8-Ch66c

CELEBRATING THE ANCIENT LANDS WE OPERATE ON ASC’s Osborne, SA security team has commissioned a stunning mural to not only brighten up its offices, but celebrate and respect the ancient lands they’re based on. Titled "Yaltu Yartapuulti" by Ngrkani (Harley Hall) & Brooke Rigney-Lively, the piece shows an aerial landscape of Pelican Point. The artists explain “the meaning of the title comes from ‘Yaltu’, denoting pelican and ‘Yartapuulti’, being the place of sleep and dreaming to which we will one day return with our ancestors.” Mangroves, reeds and bent old trees represent biodiversity, and star-dusted pelicans symbolise spiritual connection, while kangaroo and emu tracks connect the lands with the people and communities residing in them. The mural serves as a powerful reminder of our shared responsibility to care for Country and the places in which we work, play and live. We’re extremely grateful to Brooke and Ngrkani for their heartfelt work.

CAN SUBMARINE DESIGN TECHNIQUES BENEFIT OTHER COMPLEX INDUSTRIES? A resounding “Yes” was the message delivered recently to a national audience of engineering students and professionals by ASC naval architect Nathan. Invited by Engineers Australia (EA) to present to a gathering of EA members, engineering students and, via live streaming, the wider Australian engineering community, Nathan discussed the complexity of submarine design and how its techniques can be applied to other complex systems. “It was a really valuable session,” says Nathan. “Many in the audience were fascinated by the scale of submarine engineering projects, and the challenges involved in designing and successfully integrating so many different systems. “There are a lot of transferrable principles and approaches there.” If you’re interested in exploring a submarine engineering career with ASC, visit: https://lnkd.in/g8-Ch66c

AND THAT’S A WRAP FOR IODS 2024 Thanks to the many delegates and school students who’ve dropped in for a chat at the ASC stand over the last few days here at the Indian Ocean Defence & Security (IODS) 2024 conference in Perth. The event has been a fantastic success, with many informative presentations and panel discussions, and countless productive meetings and conversations. We’ve also proven yet again that our ASC sub socks get snapped up like nobody’s business - our most popular merch item by a long shot. We're already looking forward to the next IODS - and we'll be sure to replenish our sub socks in time for the next one...

ASC SUPPORTING DEFENCE INDUSTRY IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA ASC has demonstrated its support for the growing defence sector in Western Australia by signing a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the WA Government. The MoU was signed today at the Indian Ocean Defence and Security Conference in Perth. The MoU will seek to promote and develop the Western Australian defence industry in support of the sustainment of Australia’s conventional, and nuclear-powered submarines that will call Western Australia home from 2027. The MoU focuses on integrating and supporting Western Australian Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) into the ASC supply chain, and training and developing the future workforce for submarine sustainment in Western Australia. Pictured below at the MoU signing are (from left) WA Defence Industry Minister Paul Papalia, ASC Managing Director and CEO, Stuart Whiley, and WA Acting Minister for Training and Workforce Development, Hannah Beazley.
