“Australian maritime doctrine and tactics will need updating accordingly. This will be essential to ensure our sailors can deter meaningful threats to merchant shipping and maritime trade if needed. These measures should form part of a whole-of-nation approach to Australia’s evolving defence policy and planning in the Indian Ocean region”, writes Marcus Schultz.

Australian Strategic Policy Institute reposted this
Fantastic to be back in Canberra earlier this month to meet with colleagues across the Australian Government to discuss research on UN peace operations, protection of civilians, multilateralism and women, peace and security. Thanks in particular to the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, Justin Bassi and Raelene Lockhorst for hosting a roundtable on our report from The Stimson Center on ‘The Role of Air Power in UN Peacekeeping’ (with thanks to Gabriel Zito for organizing!). It was also fantastic to sit down with Olivia N. to record a podcast on the UN and the future of multilateralism, among other topics (stay tuned for a future episode of ‘Stop the World’). Great to be back in my old stomping ground for the week and catch-up with so many friends and colleagues, despite the Canberra winter!

"Malign threats ultimately pose the bigger problem, and the best way to safeguard against those is to stick with trusted providers. To turn hastily to providers from high-risk countries–whether China or Russia given the shadowy connections of the US-banned Kaspersky–would amount to solving the reliability issue by creating an even worse security weakness", write Justin Bassi and James King.

“The CrowdStrike incident exposed several glaring weaknesses in our current approach and has underscored the need for a fundamental shift in our cybersecurity culture. To mitigate these risks, Australia must adopt a proactive and multi-faceted approach to cybersecurity, moving beyond reactive measures and embracing a culture of resilience”, argues Andrew Horton.

“Early in a second Trump term, the value of our US partnerships should be reinforced, starting with Quad meetings that emphasise that the grouping was revived in 2017 under his presidency. These should be swiftly followed by AUKUS meetings to highlight the benefits to the US”, write Jennifer J. and Justin Bassi.
