A Cochrane review found that the Lidcombe Program has the best available evidence that early treatment is better than natural recovery in the short to medium term. So does that mean that you should not consider other treatments? Of course it doesn't! But if you decide to use the Lidcombe Program with a family, there is strong empirical support for that decision. And the Australian Stuttering Research Centre website has many clinical materials to assist you: https://bit.ly/3SIM0Mm Read the review: https://lnkd.in/gVBJNqks Sjøstrand, Å., Kefalianos, E., Hofslundsengen, H., Guttormsen, L. AI is making strides in assessing stuttering severity, with recent reports bringing us closer to this reality. While automatic measures could one day match be interchangeable with subjective ratings of stuttering severity, it's still unclear whether they'll replace the simplicity and convenience of the 10-point scales used by clinicians and parents for self-assessment. This remains to be seen! Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/gmqNQCES Barrett, L., Tang, K., & Howell, P. (2024). The Clinical Procedures for School-Age Children Who Stutter Workshop is designed for speech pathologists to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to assist school-age children who stutter. The workshop begins with an overview of the characteristics of stuttering in school age children, measurement of stuttering, and initial assessment. Overarching principles to guide clinical practice with this client group are introduced. Evidence-based stuttering treatments are described, and common issues discussed. Participants learn through discussion and role-play, through video demonstration and by hearing from all key stakeholders including children who stutter, their parents, speech pathologists and psychologists. The next workshop will be delivered in September 2024. Teasing and bullying is never ok! Teasing and bullying can lead to mental health difficulties, including anxiety. Children who stutter are at risk of being teased and bullied because of the way they speak. Bullying is not always obvious and can often be downplayed. If you know someone being bullied, stand up for them. Advocate for them. They may need your voice to help find theirs. The ASRC are developing a new, simple treatment for young children who stutter. The treatment is based on research evidence that has shown two simple procedures may reduce stuttering. You and your child are eligible to participate if: • you are the parent of a child who stutters. • your child is younger than 3 years of age. • your child is not currently receiving stuttering treatment. • your child has not had treatment for stuttering. Telehealth is here to stay! The Covid pandemic saw a surge of enthusiasm for telehealth with stuttering treatment, with reports in Western literature showing its benefits. And now there is a small study from India showing the same thing. Participants were comfortable discussing personal issues such as anxiety, and were able to handle the platform well. As usual, internet connectivity could be an issue for some, and some preferred a mix of telehealth and in-clinic sessions.
