AUSTSWIM, as a proud member of the Australian Water Safety Council, was honoured to attend today’s launch of the National Drowning Report 2024 at Parliament House, Canberra. Interim CEO Brad Maunsell represented AUSTSWIM at the event, highlighting these alarming statistics: 🔹323 people drowned in Australian waterways this past year—a figure 16% higher than the 10-year average. 82% of these drownings were males. 🔹A promising 25% decrease in drownings was observed among children aged 0-4 years. 🔹However, drowning deaths among those 65 years and older rose by 44%, now representing over a quarter of all drowning deaths. 🔹83 people who drowned were born overseas, with the majority from India, China, and Nepal. 🔹Swimming pools accounted for 35 drowning deaths. Brad Maunsell emphasised the critical role of the research conducted by Royal Life Saving Australia and Surf Life Saving, thanking them for their advocacy.
