Growers and Agronomists in Gippsland got an update on the Fall armyworm situation this week. From pheromone blends, to identification, to resistances surveillance, attendees heard from: • Shakira Johnson, AUSVEG Biosecurity Coordinator • Dr Ramesh Puri, Extension Officer, Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (Queensland) • Dr Duong Nguyen, Research Scientist, NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development • Dr Vivian Mendez, Research Group Leader, Macquarie University • Dr Melina Miles, Principal Entomologist, QDAF Attendees were also able to get up close with Fall armyworm samples and speak one on one with the presenters. National fall armyworm innovation system for the Australian vegetable industry is funded by Hort Innovation using the vegetable research and development levy and contributions from the Australian Government. VegNET 3.0 is a vegetable and onion industry extension program nationally coordinated by AUSVEG and funded by Hort Innovation using the vegetable and onion research and development levies and contributions from the Australian Government.

The US is the fourth largest onion producer in the world, and harvest more than 12 times the annual onion volume of Australia. But despite being an order of magnitude larger, the fundamentals in the field are very similar, and pests, diseases, and weeds are as much a threat to the US onion industry as they are in Australia. Managing those threats is impossible without understanding the total 'farmscape' that you operate in, according to Dr Daniel Drost, Professor Emeritus of Horticulture and a former Extension Vegetable Specialist in the Department of Plants, Soils and Climate at Utah State University. Dr Drost was in Australia to speak to growers as part of a levy-funded onion study tour, and we had a chat with him at the Hort Connections 2024 trade show. What is the potential to develop a national surveillance and diagnostic framework for soil-borne pathogens of melon, onion, potato, sweet potato and vegetable crops? The ongoing project, “feasibility/scoping study: surveillance and diagnostic framework for detecting soil-borne pathogens in vegetable industries,” led by the @NSW Department of Primary Industries is aiming to find out. The project has three main areas of focus: ✔️Enhancing biosecurity preparedness by determining the best methods for soil sampling and diagnostics. ✔️Determining the feasibility scope of developing a nationally consistent framework for soil surveillance and diagnostics. ✔️Highlighting new areas for R&D investment. Join American plant pathologist, Dr Amy Charkowski (Colorado State University), Praise Taddle (Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (Queensland)) and Shakira Johnson (AUSVEG) for an interactive workshop.
