🌍⌛ Today, 1 August, 2024, is #EarthOvershootDay: the day we’ve used up more of our planet’s resources than it can regenerate in a year. This is a day earlier than last year and five months forward over the past 60 years. Businesses—by consuming more resources than the planet can regenerate and often prioritizing short-term profits over long-term sustainability—are part of the problem. But #BCorps continue are demonstrating that businesses can—and must—also be part of the solution. By moving away from economic principles that promote greed, wealth inequality, and ecological collapse, the #BCorpMovement is working towards a future where businesses regenerate rather than deplete our planet’s resources. But with the climate crises intensifying, to protect our planet and the life it sustains, we need to #MoveTheDate of Earth Overshoot Day. To address this challenge, the standards for #BCorpCertification are evolving. Swipe right to learn more or read the “Environmental Stewardship & Circularity” impact topic in our latest draft standards: https://bit.ly/3WpSFvT

Our economic system doesn’t serve everyone — but that was by design. In the 1980s, monetary policies in Aotearoa set in motion a new wave of inequity that we’re still seeing today. We’re proud to support this project together with Wellbeing Economy Alliance Aotearoa NZ and their partners to show people that our economic system is a product of design made to serve a small few. It can be reimagined to benefit people and planet. We need to leave Neoliberalism where it belongs: in the 80s.
Before 1984, it was normal that large families could be supported by a single income earner. Now, two-income households are struggling to get by. Climate breakdown, crumbling infrastructure, obscene wealth gaps, and a generation locked out of home ownership are all symptoms of an out of date economic system. We have just launched a new video campaign reminding people that the system has a name, it's called Neoliberalism. 40 years ago this week, Rogernomics brought Neoliberalism to New Zealand and today, it isn’t delivering the basics like housing, food and opportunities for all. The idea that wealth would trickle down has not created opportunities for large numbers of people while creating environmental damage that will limit the opportunities of future generations. This should be a concern across the political spectrum, even Former National Party Prime Minister Jim Bolger believes Neoliberalism has failed Aotearoa New Zealand. We need to leave Neoliberalism in the 80s. Our economic system is a product of design and can be redesigned to put our human and planetary needs at the centre. There are alternatives. Work is happening to progress a Wellbeing Economy in Aotearoa.
