Tradition and fun: Beach bocce in Fraser Island with Mario De Marco! Beach bocce is a fun way to enjoy playing bocce with friends in a relaxed setting on velvet sandy beaches while soaking up the warm sun with friends and family. For Mario De Marco and his group of cousins, this has been a cherished tradition for nearly three decades. Every time they venture out for a fishing trip to Fraser Island, now known as K’gari, beach bocce is always on the agenda. Mario said: “It can be played on soft or hard sand with many obstacles at times, but we always have a great time”. On this particular occasion, Mario took on the role of photographer, capturing the essence of their beach bocce tradition. The photo showcases four members of the group of seven, including a good friend, Mario’s cousin Vince, Vince’s brother-in-law, and his nephew. From left to right in the photo, we have John, Vince, Tony, and Nick, embodying the spirit of camaraderie and fun that beach bocce brings to their gatherings on Fraser Island.

Bocce around the states: August 2024 update Boosting bocce participation: A new era for Deer Park Bocce Club Bocce Victoria (BV) and Bocce Australia (BA) recently visited the Deer Park Bocce Club, where they are collaborating with Brimbank Council, Deer Park Bocce, and Special Olympics West to enhance community participation. This initiative comes on the heels of a significant upgrade: in addition to their five covered outdoor courts, Deer Park Bocce Club has received a new, enclosed, and covered two-court bocce center, courtesy of Brimbank Council. This state-of-the-art facility is set to be the heart of a series of events scheduled between August and December 2024, aiming to showcase this vibrant Maltese community-run club. During the visit, BV and BA representatives had the pleasure of meeting with Mario, the President of Deer Park Bocce Club, and Gavin Dovey from Special Olympics West. Together, they discussed the exciting open days and activities planned to attract new members and raise awareness of the club’s offerings. One of the key initiatives includes Special Olympics West’s Open Training Saturdays, starting from August 24 through to November 23, held every second week. These sessions, with an entry fee of $5, are specifically designed to welcome participants with special needs, along with their carers and families, to experience the joy of bocce. In addition, Bocce Victoria will host ‘Come and Try’ sessions for the local community, offering a chance to test out the new courts. These events are scheduled for Sunday mornings on September 8, October 6, and November 3 from 11am to 12pm. The focus will be on encouraging women to join in, with experienced bocce players on hand to ensure a fun and engaging experience. This collaborative effort highlights the commitment to making Deer Park Bocce Club a hub of activity and inclusivity, celebrating the sport and the community that supports it. August 2024 President's message Congratulations to our Australian Olympic athletes for their best-ever results, finishing fourth in the world! As we transition from the Olympics to the Paralympics, we look forward to seeing our cousin sport, Boccia, on display. We wish Team Australia much success! Sport fosters personal growth, community, and positive change, and bocce is committed to embodying these values. We are proud to support the Australian Sports Commission’s (ASC) ‘Sport Participation Strategy’ — ‘Play Well.’ In collaboration with the ASC team, we have been aligning our initiatives with this strategy, which promotes inclusivity for all ages, backgrounds, genders, and abilities, ensuring everyone can participate in a safe and welcoming environment. The strategy includes four phases, with the first three focused on creating a unified system leading to the Brisbane 2032 Games. By 2026, all sports must align their priorities and resources. For bocce, this means our affiliated clubs need to synchronise their efforts to promote growth in the sport, in line with Bocce Australia’s ‘Play Well’ roadmap agreed upon with the ASC. We aim to have multiple streams of activities fully operational by 2026, focusing on increasing participation across all categories of the sport. Together, let’s create a vibrant bocce community that encourages participation, collaboration, and enjoyment for all! Frank Funari Bocce Australia CEO
