About us

An Indigenous policy reform and leadership organisation dedicated to empowering Cape York Indigenous people. Cape York Partnership pursues Indigenous empowerment. The long hand of government intervention in the lives of Indigenous people has too often smothered Indigenous initiative, leadership and responsibility. Cape York Partnership is an Indigenous organisation that has stood up to lead a comprehensive reform agenda to turn this on its head. We want to ensure that Indigenous rights and responsibility exist in proper balance, and Indigenous people are truly enabled to be the masters of their own exciting destinies. Cape York Partnership believes economic engagement is central to individual and social wellbeing. To that end, we partner with governments, corporates and philanthropists to encourage the emergence of a prosperous yet distinctly Indigenous people, whose children can orbit between communities and the Australian and global world and enjoy the best of both. Our touchstone is our partnership with individuals, families and communities as they strive for lives of value, freedom and prosperity. We believe in the potential of all people. We place our children’s rights to a better future at the forefront. Above all, Cape York Partnership takes, and expects from our partners, responsibility for leading positive change. The guiding light of Cape York Partnership is the Cape York Agenda. The aspirations of Cape York people became the Cape York Agenda: • Rebuild social norms • Restore Indigenous authority • Address the welfare pedestal through changing the incentive • Support engagement in the real economy • Move from welfare housing to home ownership • Enable children to make full use of their talents, creativity and to enjoy the best of both worlds To learn more visit www.capeyorkpartnership.org.au

Cape York Partnership would like to extend our gratitude to Minister Linda Burney as she steps down from her role as Minister for Indigenous Australians. Minister Burney has consistently championed community-led solutions in jobs, education, and health, empowering our people to drive the changes needed for our families to thrive. We look forward to working with the new minister, Senator Malarndirri McCarthy, and building on the important work already accomplished in Cape York.

Cape York Institute Leadership Academy’s (CYILA) first Indigenous Leadership Development Program was a resounding success as participants developed their leadership capabilities and learned to walk the line between community, corporate and government. Close to 20 participants from Woodside learned about themselves, their strengths, how to lead a team and how to lead change. This program is the first step into a corporate development model and follows through with the commitment on building first nations talent across the nation. Participants were treated to a lunch and panel discussion headed by Ben Wyatt and Noel Pearson where they were able to personally connect with the two Indigenous leaders.

Energised. That's the word I've chosen to sum up my 6-week Jawun secondment at Cape York Partnership. It's been my immense pleasure to get to work on an initiative geared towards improving First Nations women's workforce participation at Bama Services. And seeing the impact firsthand was not only encouraging, but emotional. Things I've learnt my short & sharp stint, 🌱 Listen deeply. Don't just listen to respond. There's so much to learn from things that are unsaid. 🌱 Lean into discomfort. The experience can be unstructured and evolve at a pace or outcome you aren't expecting. You may need to find different ways of working to support this. 🌱 Test your assumptions. There are stories, experiences, challenges that can be uncomfortable to hear. While I felt prepared after doing Department of Industry, Science and Resources' core cultural training, I did need to check my assumptions at times. 🌱 Be yourself. And back yourself. Easier said than done. While a lot is new, you can bring enormous value to the table through previous experience, and a different perspective. 🌱 Time flies when you're having fun. 6-weeks is a long time, but also not. Set clear expectations of yourself of what can be achieved, but also have fun with it. It's a unique experience, that's for sure. 📸 photo of three incredibly inspiring, passionate and strong women from CYP's leadership team Rose Manzini Audrey Deemal Melissa Clarke
