About us

CareFlight is an Australian aeromedical charity, established in 1986. CareFlight's mission is to save lives, speed recovery and serve the community by providing the highest standard of rapid response critical care. We use helicopters, aeroplanes and medi-jets to bring a hospital level of care to the critically ill and injured. Our aircrew, medical teams and coordinators work closely together to ensure that patients receive the best care as soon as possible. It's about bringing the right team to the right patient at the right time. CareFlight doctors and nurses are specially trained in pre-hospital and transport medicine. They care for severely injured patients who need emergency treatment at the scene of the incident. They also transport seriously ill patients who need to be moved between hospitals. CareFlight has a strong focus on education. We hold teaching accreditation with the critical care colleges of anaesthesia, intensive care and emergency medicine. Over the years CareFlight has trained hundreds of critical care specialists in the unique and challenging environment of pre-hospital and transport medicine. Everything CareFlight has achieved over the years has been with the support of the community we serve. That loyal and generous support has made it possible for CareFlight to spread our wings across Australia and beyond. We rely on our many partners and friends to provide the resources to make the CareFlight difference.

CareFlight named Charity Partner at the Raffertys Coastal Run! On Saturday July 13, hundreds of participants will embark on 12km, 22km and 36km runs, starting and finishing at NSW’s iconic Lake Macquarie, with CareFlight excited to be involved for a second consecutive year. Our nationwide work would not be possible without the support of the communities we serve. These contributions help facilitate our aeromedical work, including that undertaken by the Mounties Care CareFlight Rapid Response Helicopter in Greater Sydney. As one of the world’s fastest doctor-staffed helicopter services, our crews bring emergency-room level care to the seriously injured at the accident site, operating extensively throughout The Central Coast Region. On behalf of everyone at CareFlight, thank you to Mark Roberts, Max Adventure and everyone participating on July 13. We look forward to seeing you there!

CareFlight is proud to unveil Indigenous artwork on its NT Rescue Helicopter powered by Viva Energy, reinforcing the aeromedical service’s commitment to reconciliation ahead of NAIDOC Week.   Crafted by Dixon Patten, a Yorta Yorta and Gunnai artist, this artwork intricately weaves together symbols of ancient wisdom and community resilience. The circles and infinity symbols represent enduring cultural practices, while the dots and lines symbolise the connections between family and the transfer of knowledge. The artwork also features gum leaves, boomerangs, kangaroo, and emu tracks, honoring the land and the wisdom of Traditional Custodians. These elements reflect our deep respect for Indigenous cultures and our ongoing journey toward reconciliation. Operating in remote NT communities, this helicopter is more than a lifesaver—it's a beacon of hope during critical moments, ensuring that quality healthcare reaches those who need it most. This collaboration has allowed CareFlight to honour and celebrate Indigenous culture in a meaningful way. As the first charity aeromedical organisation to feature such significant artwork on its aircraft, CareFlight is setting a precedent in cultural recognition and community engagement. Visit our website to learn more about this collaboration between CareFlight and Viva Energy, and how CareFlight’s commitment to reconciliation is central to the organisation’s mission to save lives and speed recovery, delivering better health outcomes in Australia.   For more; visit the link for more info; https://lnkd.in/gaAF8Es3   #CareFlight #Reconciliation #NAIDOCWeek

We’ve just wrapped up a great week of Nutrien Ag Solutions - Australia #EmergencyTraumaTraining, powered by CareFlight down in the chilly state of Tasmania. It’s great to be working with Nutrien again and throughout 2024; with their agricultural expertise, we can reach more Australians than ever and give them vital lifesaving training.    Workshop participants from Legerwood, Scottsdale, Youngtown, Prospect, Western Junction and Powranna have already learned skills that can help save a life in the vital first few minutes when they’re the first responder to a trauma scene. Airway management, haemorrhage control, and efficient emergency services handover, among others, are incredibly important skills when it comes to closing the links in the chain of survival.    And in a few days’ time, we’ll be continuing our Tasmanian trek, by visiting agricultural communities in Bridgewater and Huonville.

ROADTRIP FOR RURAL HEALTHCARE It’s been a long and rewarding road to get here – and we’re ready to roll out! The newest member of the CareFlight Patient Transport Service fleet has arrived and is already on the road helping patients in the Port Macquarie region. Part of the Patient Transport Service network that spreads out across most of Northern NSW, CareFlight Patient Transport Vehicles (PTV) undergo a lot of modifications before they are ready to go out to patients in remote and rural areas of Australia. Starting life as a standard van, this PTV received extensive modifications to deliver high-quality healthcare to Australians requiring inter-hospital transport. The interior is stripped away to start from scratch; we add High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) [DW1] filters to keep the air inside the vehicle safe and clean, floor locks for electronic Stryker stretchers, mounts for securing medical equipment, and additional seats for our Road Nurses. Additional electrical work is performed to support the extra medical equipment and lights. And we put in lots and lots of storage for all the different pieces patients might need during their journeys. This PTV joins 14 others on our Northern NSW Patient Transport Service, and has already been out on 6 missions since it started transporting patients in the Port Macquarie area late last week. We are grateful to the Community Development Fund for supporting this project from purchase all the way through the modification process. With their help, CareFlight is now able to reach more Australians in Northern NSW.

As part of CareFlight’s commitment to continuous improvement, we are excited to be hosting a Past Patients, Friends, and Family of Past Patients Day at our Westmead base in June. The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care National Safety and Quality Health (NSQHS) Standards (2nd Edition), Standard - Partnering with Consumers, Standard 2 - aims to ensure that consumers are partners in the design, delivery and evaluation of healthcare systems and services and that patients are given the opportunity to be partners in their own care. CareFlight’s Head of Clinical Governance, Ken McNoe, is passionate about ensuring our services continue to meet the diverse needs of the consumer populations and communities that we serve. A member of the Australasian Institute of Clinical Governance (AICG), Ken is leading efforts to ensure patient feedback translates into service improvement and design. “Engaging consumers who have needed aeromedical services can be challenging as it impacts a small, but incredibly significant part of their healthcare journey.,” Ken said. “Hosting Past Patients, Friends, and Family of Past Patients Days allows us to actively engage with the people who have interacted with our services to gain insight into what we did well, and what we could improve on, to drive service improvement, and shape the design of the services we provide to the community.”  Have you or one of your loved ones been a CareFlight patient? This is your opportunity to share feedback with the team and help CareFlight continue to improve. Find out more here https://lnkd.in/gjCDxz4N
