With the explosion of AI workloads this is no longer viable if the data centre industry wishes to maintain their social licence to operate. The social, economic, productivity and security benefits of the latest technology, and the fourth Industrial Revolution, will only be realised in harmony with a sustainable approach to resource consumption. At CDC we have never consumed water in our own data centres’ cooling operations. This saves 5000 million litres of clean drinking water each year. Accessing a major data centre in New Zealand requires pre-approved security clearance and an executive escort around the heavily secured site, as Markets with Madison Reidy found out when filming Infratil’s $10 billion data centre business. This is the first time anyone has been allowed to take cameras inside a major centre that stores sensitive online information and technology equipment for governments and businesses. “If you want to do anything in the modern economy, it almost has to come through this facility,” Infratil chief executive Jason Boyes infra told Markets with Madison at the Auckland data centre. “So that’s what’s driving our conviction.” Infratil owns about half of the Australian business CDC data centres, which has two sites in Auckland. The stake is now valued at close to $5b - more than 10 times the $400 million Infratil first invested in the business in 2016. CDC is AI and Super-Compute Ready! CDC is incredibly proud to be hosting CSIRO's High-Performance computer (HPC) system, Virga in its Hume Data Centre in Canberra. Today's launch sees the culmination of a great collaboration between CDC, CSIRO, Dell Technologies, and NVIDIA to produce the Virga HPC system which is built on state-of-the-art Dell PowerEdge XE9640 servers and is the first deployment of its kind in Australia, designed to optimise artificial intelligence (AI) workflows while also being power-efficient using direct liquid cooling. This is another example of CDC's long history of expertise in closed loop and direct liquid cooling systems, demonstrating its readiness to host AI and super-compute workloads in its data centres. #csiro #csirodata61 #delltechnologies #cdc #sustainability
