“I look after all things concrete.” That’s Wayne, General Foreman for Structures at Wambo Wind Farm in Queensland, who organises the building of foundations for the turbines. Wayne enjoys the opportunity to pass his expertise on to the next generation, as well as meeting new people on site. Wambo Wind Farm is a joint venture between Cubico Sustainable Investments and Stanwell Corporation Limited, a QLD Government-owned electricity generator.  The project, which is creating more than 200 jobs during construction, will add more than 500 MW of clean energy to Queensland’s energy system when completed. The Clean Energy Council's Quarterly Investment Report shows an uptick in renewable and storage investment in Q2 2024. Storage in particular continues a strong trend in growth, with six projects representing 573 MW / 2,047 MWh reaching financial commitment. Notably, five of these six storage projects are hybrid assets - ie, paired with a new wind or solar generator.   These results are particularly interesting because they show the market doing what it does best - responding to clear and consistent price signals. Recently, there has been a lot of commentary regarding wholesale price trends in the NEM, with low wind conditions and high gas costs driving wholesale spikes earlier in the year, followed by more recent reductions associated with an abundance of wind and solar generation. Yesterday an article in the Fin Rev picked up on this, highlighting issues with negative prices and economic curtailment, due to cyclical changes in the supply / demand balance. My comment in the article was to highlight how these prices are sending strong signals for new investment in flexible loads and energy storage (either standalone or hybrid) - which is borne out by today's numbers. These figures show the Clean Energy Industry powering ahead and getting the job done, despite the obstacles put in our way by bad actors and fossil fuel ideologues. New financial commitments to large-scale energy storage continue to power Australia’s transition to renewables, and the capacity of financially committed renewable energy generation projects in 2024 (1.6 GW) has already eclipsed the total from 2023 (1.3 GW). Those are the headlines from our Renewable Projects Quarterly Investment report for Q2 2024, released today. As we reported in our quarterly report for Q1 this year, it has been a sluggish period for large-scale generation projects, but it is pleasing to see the numbers going up compared to what was a slow 2023. Last week, the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) released its latest Electricity Statement of Opportunities report, which recognised the volumes of new utility scale generation and storage investment being delivered by clean energy as a key factor in improving the reliability of the energy grid, so the continued stream of investment pouring into storage, and the uptick in generation investment, is fantastic news. Last night we hosted another fantastic Member Mixer in Adelaide at the beautiful Immersive Light and Art venue, sponsored by ZEN Energy. We were privileged to welcome Sam Crafter, Chief Executive of the Office of Hydrogen Power in South Australia, who reflected on SA’s remarkable journey into renewables, updated the crowd on the Hydrogen Jobs Plan, the importance of strong engagement with communities, and wellbeing in a long and difficult energy transition. South Australia has been world-leading in its transition to renewables, from 1 per cent renewables 16 years ago, to almost 77 per cent today. That’s a remarkable achievement and one which the other states can look to as inspiration. As ageing fossil fuel generation exits our energy system, renewable energy is stepping up to keep the lights on. That’s the story in the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO)’s latest Electricity Statement of Opportunities report, published today. The market operator finds the pipeline of current and expected energy projects will meet reliability standards for most of the next 10 years. AEMO’s analysis recognises the volumes of new utility scale generation and storage investment being delivered by the clean energy industry as a key factor in improving reliability. Reliability is also supported by government initiatives such as state Renewable Energy Zones and the Capacity Investment Scheme. The coordinated rollout of consumer energy resources, chiefly rooftop solar and batteries, also plays a key role in reliability, while accelerating transmission investment is key.
