Costa CEO Marc Werner, who was among the speakers at The Australian Global Food Forum held in Brisbane today, has highlighted the challenges the fresh produce sector faces in getting access to crucial markets in China and Japan, for some of its key produce lines. “Free trade agreements have been very beneficial for Australian agriculture, including fresh produce growers and over the past 15 years, Costa and many others have benefitted from free trade agreements with Japan, China, United States, Korea and India. “However, free trade agreements only address tariffs, they do not address what are known as non-trade barriers, including the negotiation of export protocols, which are often related to the treatment of fresh produce for fruit fly.” The solution is a whole of government approach for fresh produce exports. Berries are one of the fastest growing categories in fresh produce, with the US berry market up more than 40% over the past five years, selling twice as much as any other fruit. The rise in demand highlights the importance of superior genetics and innovation, which Paine Schwartz Partners and Costa – an industry leader in the development and production of premium berries (notably, blueberries) –– continue to advance with our strategic partners Driscoll's and BCI. National Diabetes Week runs from 14 – 20 July, this annual campaign aims to raise awareness on all types of diabetes, including increased awareness on preventing type 2 diabetes. Diabetes Australia states ‘there is evidence that shows type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed in up to 58 per cent of cases by maintaining a healthy weight, being physically active and following a healthy eating plan.’ That healthy eating plan should include copious amounts of fruit and veg. Much better for you than so called 'supplements', and also cheaper in the long run.

With relations improving between Aust and China, I've been scouring the news for any mention of progress on fresh produce market access for Australian grown product into China, including progress on apples, blueberries and avocados. Alas, wine and lobster appear to be front and centre (and full marks btw to those industries for being politically organised enough to get a whole of government approach to their export access issues), but I can't find anything about fresh produce. Even though it employs tens of thousands of people, and provides the economic and social foundation for so many regional communities allowing people to pursue careers and raise families without the need to move to metro areas, fresh produce continues to be the poor distant cousin when it comes to export market access. This situation does not look like it's going to change any time soon, and more is the pity. https://lnkd.in/gst3Cqf3

Happy Eat Your Vegetables Day! Today is the perfect day to celebrate the amazing benefits of adding more veggies to a diet. Of course that includes mushrooms! Obviously, these versatile and delicious fungi are packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, making them a superstar in the vegetable world. Psst... your followers might want to know this: A fantastic way to incorporate more mushrooms into your meals is by using The Blend cooking technique. Simply substitute a portion of your minced meat with finely diced mushrooms. This not only makes your meals healthier and more sustainable but also enhances the flavour and stretches your meat further.
