Top Queensland cancer researcher Maher Gandhi has been appointed the next chief executive of the Brisbane-based Translational Research Institute Australia. TRI, which is a collaboration between Queensland Health, The University of Queensland, QUT (Queensland University of Technology) and Mater Research, provides world-class medical research facilities, links to clinicians and clinical trial facilities. Professor Gandhi. who will take up his new role in February, is already based at TRI as executive director of the institute’s partner Mater Research. TRI chair Emeritus Professor David Siddle says Gandhi’s appointment would build on the outstanding work of previous chief executive Scott Bell, who did not seek an extension of his five-year tenure earlier this year.

It’s the $3.6 billion development that has been the subject of admiration, scandal and delay since its announcement eight years ago, and now, the Queens Wharf Precinct is finally ready to open, some of it at least. The Star Entertainment Group has been clear from the outset that the precinct would have a staggered opening, between August 29 and November, but guests may be surprised to learn what is, and what isn’t, ready to go when the doors are thrown open on Thursday. While key attractions like the Neville Bonner Bridge, which completed construction in February 2023, and the Star Grand Hotel, are prepped and ready, the development remains largely a construction site. #queenswharf #brisbane #construction

Brisbane Metro would extend to the airport and deep into South East Queensland suburbs under a major proposal to solve a critical public transport shortage before the 2032 Olympics. 22 new stations would be built on an extended network to Carseldine, Capalaba, Springwood and the airport, through Airportlink, Doomben and DFO. The long awaited aviation white paper includes 56 initiatives to reform the industry, and promote greater competition. The 240 page document acknowledged the dominance of the Qantas - Virgin Australia duopoly, and the fact Australian travellers paid more for airfares than those in other countries. Transport Minister Catherine King said the “centrepiece” of the white paper was an independent Aviation Industry Ombuds Scheme and a Charter of Customer Rights. The aviation ombudsman would be industry-funded, and based on the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman with the capacity to handle large numbers of complaints and uphold high levels of service. #transport #airline #airport #aviation #australia

ASX-listed insurer Suncorp Group has warned the rush to meet Australia’s housing shortage risks baking in the potential for property damage and disasters, as it also flagged premiums were set to continue rising to meet surging inflationary costs. Ruling off a $1.19bn full-year profit on Monday, Suncorp revealed it was enjoying a bumper 11.7 per cent lift in returns, and detailed plans to shower investors with cash from its $4.1bn sale of Suncorp Bank to ANZ, in the coming year. But chief executive Steve Johnston said the insurer was seeing an increasing number of claims tied to poor property design and building materials, warning Australia risked baking in future problems amid the construction sector crunch.
