“Change is often uncomfortable, and allowing disabled people into the rooms of power and decision making seems particularly discomfiting. Disability leaders often operate differently, and that difference causes discomfort.” Check out Christina’s latest article ‘Embracing Discomfort’. https://lnkd.in/gc9MP3uJ #DisabilityLeaders #DLI #DiverseWorkPlaces #HR #Ableism #EmbracingDiversity #Diversity

Who’s running your organisation? Who’s on your executive? Who’s on your board? And if there is no presence of disability, why not? What’s that about? DLI CEO, Christina Ryan, spoke at the RIAA Conference in Sydney earlier this year on the panel ‘DE&I: The case for Disability, Equity and Inclusion’. The panel delves into what leading investors are doing to lead the charge in the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion frontier. Disability Leadership Institute reposted this
I'm looking forward to seeing what Disability Leadership Institute member Anna Boucher will say this Oration. #Disability #Leadership in action.
Chair of Discipline at University of Sydney | London School of Economics PhD-educated | Policy Expert | Political Scientist and Solicitor | Immigration | Labour Markets | Employment Law | Future of Education
Next Wednesday night I will be giving the 2024 UWA Oration of Prof. Laki Jayasuriya on Multiculturalism at The University of Western Australia. Professor Jayasuriya was a giant of multicultural studies and practice and it's an honour to give his Oration this year. I've worked with five of my students (all of migrant background) to develop this Oration where we explore complex issues in immigration policy through the lens of immigration stories. These include refugee status and intergenerational education and wealth, transnational mothering, international student status during COVID-19, New Zealand citizenship applications in a time of policy change and skills accreditation for international students. We argue that individual migrant narratives build compelling bases upon which to understand policy in a way that connects with citizens in an emotional and embodied way. This Oration is also important for me for another reason. For the first time ever in a public space, I am reflecting openly on my own second generation migrant background (Polish) and the impact this has had on my outlook as a researcher. In particular, the strong influence growing up with my Polish maternal grandmother (Babcia) on my understandings of immigration, war and intergenerational transformation. My Babcia is pictured below as she looked in the 1940s. As I will say in the Oration: "We know that 48% of Australians are now like me, they are of migrant background or there have at least one family member born overseas (Census 2022). One day soon, the majority of Australians will be of migrant background, and we will all need to contend with what that means on a deep level for our identity as a nation." I'm deeply honoured and looking forward to giving this Oration next week #migration #immigrationpolicy #citizenship #multiculturalism
