When dealing with legal questions, the tendency of large language models to hallucinate – or just make stuff up – is a big problem. Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is a technique designed to eliminate hallucinations by ensuring the model only draws its answers from reliable sources. In this blog post, our Chief Data Scientist Paul Hunter looks at some recent research into RAG legal tools and finds the path from RAGs to riches is not straightforward. https://lnkd.in/g7eQ6gNr

Can RAG eliminate AI hallucinations or do we smell a RAT?

We’re delighted to have joined a network of more than 3,000 corporate, government, and not-for-profit organisations that have made a formal commitment to reconciliation through the Reconciliation Australia Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) program. Our Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan for 2024-25 communicates our commitment to the RAP process to our staff, customers, and the broader community – and it features some stunning artwork from our First Nations and Diversity Advisor Marcus Pedro. We will review and identify ways to improve and support employment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the information technology sector. https://lnkd.in/gUse7zX2

At EDT, we’ve been using various kinds of AI for more than a decade. We believe generative AI and large language models (LLMs) have immense potential. The question is whether LLMs – or other deep learning technologies – might deliver better results than current approaches or deliver the same results using fewer resources or less time. Our latest blog post by Paul Hunter and Phil Smith lays out some of the most promising areas where generative AI and LLMs could make a big difference to evidence management workflows. https://lnkd.in/gpTcsd4e

EDT’s intern program for First Nations female IT students aims to help change the traditional low representation of Indigenous women in the IT sector. Our First Nations and diversity advisor Marcus Pedro says negotiations are underway with a leading Queensland university to establish an intern program for two or more students each year. “EDT will provide personal training, a supportive and caring environment, and real-world experience that can be difficult for First Nations students to obtain,” he says. “We hope at least some of our interns will find full-time work at EDT after they graduate. Even if they don’t, the internship will give them a much deeper understanding of what it’s like working in the IT industry.” The intern program emerged from EDT’s work on its Reconciliation Action Plan, which is currently in the approval process. “As part of the reconciliation process, we want to take real steps to give First Nations people opportunities to succeed,’’ he explains. “As a woman owned and managed business, EDT wants to help First Nations women get a foothold in this traditionally male-dominated industry.” Image: EDT’s First Nations and diversity advisor Marcus Pedro (right) with CEO Jo Sherman

EDT team members from Australia and the UK and managed services partner Bell Integration - Driving Digital Transformation held an intense and productive workshop in Portugal 🇵🇹 to strengthen our CloudOps capability. After that, some of the team headed to Barcelona 🇪🇸 for a weekend of R&R where Jo Sherman and Stefanie Hill ran an impromptu marathon.* Despite entering only days before the event with no real training under their belts, they still finished in a very respectable time. It was a testament to their grit, camaraderie, and tenacity – all qualities that make EDT great! 💪😅😁🏃♀️🏃♀️ *Your definition of R&R may vary.
