Last week, the Prime Minister and First Ministers of every jurisdiction in Australia acknowledged the role that systems and harmful industries, like alcohol, can play in exacerbating violence. This is an acknowledgement that could not have been imagined four months ago - when alcohol was not mentioned once by National Cabinet. As Kym Valentine, an experienced television/theatre actor and Survivor Advocate said: “For far too long, it has been politically controversial to take action on alcohol – despite the fact that the link between alcohol and violence has always been categorically undeniable." "For victim survivors and children this is a significant moment. Our real-life experiences can’t be ignored, suppressed or denied any more.” Now, we look forward to continuing to work with all states and territories to ensure the voices of victim survivors are heard, and that Australian laws on alcohol prioritise the health and wellbeing of women and children. #ViolenceAgainstWomen #HarmPrevention #PublicHealth

Every Moment Matters has just marked a new milestone! Since launching in November 2021, the national awareness campaign has provided evidence-based information and advice about alcohol, pregnancy and breastfeeding. We can confirm that the official campaign website has just ticked over its one millionth view! Every Moment Matters, developed by FARE and funded by the Australian Government, is making a real difference by increasing the number of Australians who intend to have alcohol-free pregnancies. Today, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese named alcohol as one of the areas that National Cabinet will act on to prevent and reduce gender-based violence. Australia’s Premiers and Chief Ministers committed to reviewing their state and territory liquor laws and sharing best practice and reforms, before National Cabinet reconvenes. FARE welcomes this announcement and the opportunity to continue to work with states and territories to progress these reforms. Victim Survivor Kym Valentine has penned a letter to members of National Cabinet ahead of their meeting this Friday, urging them to adopt the rapid review's recommendations relating to alcohol in full. "We’ve always known that when drinking is involved, it is like pouring petrol on a bonfire.” Survivor Advocate Kym Valentine is one of more than 30 community leaders who signed an open letter urging National Cabinet to adopt a rapid review panel's recommendations regarding alcohol's role in gendered and family violence in full. Community, health, Aboriginal, research and women’s organisations urged the Prime Minister, Premiers and Chief Ministers to take a united stance and protect women and children from alcohol-related violence.
