The Red Hot Chilli Peppers grabbed the mic at the handover ceremony marking the end of the Paris Olympics. But Australia is still basking in the glow of its greatest gold medal haul ever. Australia won 18 gold surpassing its previous record of 17 from the Athens 2004 and Tokyo 2020 Olympics (see chart below). Continuing good inflation data in the US has sent markets into the “great rotation”. However, the Federal Reserve still needs a little more good news before it decides to cut. In Australia, the all-important June quarter CPI print was a mixed result and may see the RBA continue to spin its wheels and words until there is a more decisive change in inflation, in either direction. At 10:08 am (AEST) on 15 July 2024, the #ASX200 broke the 8,000 barrier for the first time (see chart below). But unlike the breaking of the 7,000 mark in January 2020, it was more of a raspberry than a bugle call. There is too much uncertainty around the direction of interest rates and Australia’s near-term economic outlook. Still, there are important drivers behind the recent rise in the ASX 200 to note, and a lot has happened since January 2020, including the ASX 200 falling to 4,500 in March 2020 at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. No, r-star doesn’t stand for “rock star”! Rather, it is the official cash rate that has a neutral impact on an economy: neither contractionary nor expansionary. It is critical for both central bankers and investors. R-star is the interest rate that central bankers aim for in the medium and longer term. While it is not a perfect measure, it provides an important guide. For investors, knowing r-star, helps them figure out the path of monetary policy over the medium term. Something new, something green! On June 3, Australia’s federal government issued its first-ever green bond: AUD 7 billion (see chart below). It was oversubscribed three-times over. While it represents a small start compared to total treasury bonds on issue, it is another step in the direction of sustainable finance for a country that has already embraced green bonds at the state and corporate levels.
