Jemena’s Major Users Customer Forum is always a great opportunity to bring together NSW’s largest gas users for information sharing and networking and this year was no different. In the morning, attendees took a tour of the Malabar Biomethane Injection Plant. It was helpful for customers to see the process in action, and it sparked valuable discussions about the future of renewable gas ahead of the forum itself. The event brought together speakers from across Jemena including Managing Director, David Gillespie who spoke about the current state of play and how Jemena is navigating the energy transition while at the same time ensuring our customers have access to reliable gas. Cooperative Research Centre leaders were busy on the Hill yesterday, briefing MPs and Senators and their offices on the contribution of CRCs to Australia’s decarbonisation challenge. Great to be with colleagues from across so many CRCs in Canberra today to launch the Cooperative Research Australia report: Mapping and quantification of CRCs’ work on decarbonisation. Future Fuels CRC is dedicated to enabling the decarbonisation of Australia's energy networks and this independent ACIL Allen analysis showcases how Cooperative Research Centres are directly contributing to Australia's ambitious decarbonisation goals. There is much research needed to deliver Australia's decarbonisation goals and CRCs offer an unrivalled framework to deliver it in collaboration with industry. Hydrogen to methanol - efficient conversion to an alternative fuel Join our webinar on 25 July to explore the latest research in developing renewable #methanol by the efficient conversion of #hydrogen. As part of Future Fuels CRC research to accelerate development of early stage, breakthrough technologies, Colin Scholes's team at the University of Melbourne have developed hybrid membrane technology and bespoke catalysts to improve hydrogen to methanol conversion. This webinar will cover research completed as part of our project RP1.3-04 - Efficient conversion of hydrogen to future fuels. The technology combines a catalytic reactor with membrane separation to achieve a membrane-based reactor, reducing the overall equipment footprint. This transformative technology can assist hydrogen producers and CO2 emitters to efficiently produce alternative fuels for their storage and transportation purposes. The webinar will include a brief introduction to hydrogen-to-methanol technologies, and the research opportunities to further enable the sector. Our pivotal project to deliver Australia’s Hydrogen Pipeline Systems Code of Practice is now complete and available to all our participating organisations! This project initiated in 2021 is a major achievement for the Future Fuels CRC community and shows how Australian industry is leading the world in the development of best practices for hydrogen pipelines. The CoP provides engineering guidance based on current knowledge for the design, construction and operation of transmission pipeline systems transporting gaseous hydrogen or blends of hydrogen and hydrocarbon fluids.   We’d like to thank all the authors and the project team for their hard work to achieve a major engineering milestone for Australian industry:  Josh Wickham, Nick Kastelein, Margaret Gayen, Sam Hatwell, Mark Lackenby, Craig Clarke, Dennis Kirk-Burnnand, Richard McDonough, Marzieh Amanabadi, Tom Amrein CPEng CIWE, Andrej Atrens, Philip Colvin, James Czornohalan, Oliver Day, Cameron Dinnis, Gilles Dour, Amir Esmaeili, Mehdi Fardi, Zachary Hill, Susan Jaques, Raj Jeyarajah, Daniel Meyer-Rodenbeck, Guillaume Michal, Michael Peoples and Klaas van Alphen.  We would also like to give special thanks to GPA Engineering and the Australian Pipelines and Gas Association (APGA) for all their support. Our participants can download the CoP from our website and we are working with the APGA to get it quickly adopted and published wider as an industry code of practice. The CoP supports the safe, reliable and efficient transportation and storage of hydrogen in transmission pipeline systems and is an initial and substantial step to the incorporation of hydrogen into the AS(/NZS) 2885 series. High pressure pipeline systems are a cost effective and reliable means of transporting hydrogen or hydrogen blends across land in large volumes. As a compressible fluid in its gaseous form, hydrogen pipeline systems also provide additional storage that could provide flexibility to support differences in supply and demand profiles and meet a range of end user requirements. As part of the Austrade delegation to the World Hydrogen Summit & Exhibition, David Norman, Pierluigi Mancarella and many others have just completed a busy week engaging with 15,000 delegates and exhibitors. Rotterdam is the centre of initial steps to build the hydrogen supply chain into Europe and it exhting to see action on the ground here including the first 22km section of the European Hydrogen backbone being installed to supply renewable hydrogen to the Shell Pernis refinery. There is no doubt the role and importance of connecting infrastructure. See attached a few pictures of the initial transmission pipeline network, much of which is sought now to be installed in the next 5+ years So many wider insights gained and connections made, new and old, to help guide our developments forward in Australia. The community here remain very passionate and focussed on the industrial sector as clearly their first priority. Whilst many sessions still focused on production and import, there was also a trend towards the reality of need for firm offtakers and demand certainty for prospective projects to move to all important FID (Final investment Decison) stage. Look forward to summarising a wider array of insights with colleagues back in Australia shortly.

Sam Culley from the University of Adelaide will share their latest research and online tool to explore how to de-risk biomethane projects and improve their viability in Australia.   Sam will cover: • Sensitivity analysis of project cost to a range of factors including techno-economic and policy related • Key leverage points that projects can use to improve their viability • Carbon emission intensities and how to optimise your project   As part of our research project, the team have developed a techno-economic assessment tool for Australian biomethane projects using all the above parameters. Sam will present on how they have used the tool to identify key factors affecting the LCOE of biomethane and potential related leverage points to help reduce it. This week a strong delegation from Australia joined global colleagues at the Emerging Fuels Symposium in Athens, Greece. This annual event brings together research parties working on new technical knoweldge supporting the infrastructure implications of introducing renewable gases such as hydrogen and BioMethane increasingly into our energy systems. Australia is at the cutting edge of much of this work and many Future Fuels CRC projects and partners have been active this week both during panel sessions and presentations. Wonderful example of global collaboration between the parties which also include Australian Pipelines and Gas Association (APGA), EPRG - European Pipeline Research Group, GERG - European Gas Research Group and PRCI - Pipeline Research Council International
