Creators of Astonishingly Unforgettable Experiences, that change lives, communities & organisations for the better.

About us

Founded in 2011, HMAS Grumpy is piloted by Founder James Boyce, with an exceptionally talented leadership team and crew at his side. We create Astonishingly Unforgettable Experiences, that have the potential to change lives, communities and organisations for the better. Grumpy combines original creative formats with emotional storycraft, to produce adventurous and ambitious experiences that evoke an intense response and imprint like a tattoo on your subconscious. We collaborate with cultural institutions, architects, businesses and brands that are looking to enhance lives and do some good in the world. Emerging as a born-digital creative studio, Grumpy Sailor served as both an in-house and external R&D arm for Google’s Creative Lab in Sydney. Since then, we have evolved into Australia’s leading experience design studio, creating installations, experiences, exhibitions and interactive artworks. Grumps is a band of misfits; each team member has taken their own weird and wonderful road to land at our doorstep, and that’s one of our greatest strengths. Our ability to create, code, build, film, paint and make, means our team adapts to any media and any challenge - and challenges are how this special breed of talent gets off. Curiosity, craft and tenacity are the hiring criteria for Grumpy Sailor. When creative minds like this learn to play in teams, the impossible becomes probable. Grumpy Sailor values a thriving arts and cultural ecosystem, accessible to all; gender equity and cultural diversity in technology and design; environmental sustainability and addressing climate change; and health and wellbeing in our community. We strive to make the world that little bit better through the work we create.

We encourage new ways to stay inspired in the Grumpy studio. This week, our Producer Nat treated the team to a viewing of the 'Scavengers' teaser by Illogic Studios “I really loved the concept about how we live in such an overly consumerist society and we discard so many things that could actually be used in a different way if we used our creativity. Just like how the rodents in Scavengers have done so. Really beautiful animation too” Check it out and tell us what you think! #Scavengers #IllogicStudios #Animation #WhatsInspiringYou

Incredibly proud of this stunning film Pete Ward and team have made, sharing an important story of equine therapy changing the lives of young Indigenous Australians. It's not only a beautiful doco but offers action and hope amongst otherwise sobering statistics. If you feel like being inspired, be sure to give it a watch! 👀 The Guardian Grumpy Sailor Creative #screenaustralia #guardian #documentary #film

"I am not up for phone conversations and have removed myself from all social media. If I see light at some stage I will contact you." This was our main subject for our documentary, pulling out of the project two years in. We had to pivot, and quickly. Luckily, in our research for that initial film, we had come across Professor Juli Coffin, and she never quite left the back of our minds. So we knew who to call. Two more years after those first conversations with Juli, our film Pressure and Release, is out now on Guardian Documentaries. This film is a celebration of the great work Juli, her staff, and her horses are doing in Broome, a community devastated by a youth suicide crisis. We hope it can act as a case study for the rest of the world in approaching mental health. So grab a cuppa, put your headphones on, or better yet cast it to your TV. Watch it here: https://lnkd.in/gayJT5GV Thanks to all the partners and collaborators that made it possible. @guardian @screenaustralia Director, Producer, Editor: Pete Ward Producers: Sam Emery and Jodie Bell DP: Brad Jarrett Location Sound: Arthur Hunter Original Music: Madeleine Cocolas Post Sound: Shaun Richards and Will Carroll at Soundfirm Colour: Yanni Kronenberg EPs: Lisa Shaunessy Rebecca Janek James Boyce James Boyce and Alex Burke - #documentary #theguardian #equinetherapy #screenaustralia

As Parrtjima, a Festival in Light, comes to a close today, we are able to take a moment to reflect on the incredible event we had the privilege of bringing to life. We saw record numbers in attendance, an unrivalled positive vibe throughout the duration of the event and rave reviews to match. Festival-goers were treated to each detail of the carefully curated experience; from the deep ruby glow mimicking the heat of the sun on the fiery earth spread across Arrernte country, to the resounding songs of the Tjoritja Cockatoo, an echo which transcends through time. The Macdonald Ranges lit up not only in light but with the stories and memories of generations past. A truly unique experience, we can’t wait to do it all over again next year! We’d like to take this opportunity to honour the Arrernte people, past and present, and to thank them for guiding us through this extraordinary experience. #Parrtjima #FestivalInLight #AliceSprings #NTaustralia #AboriginalLightFestival #ImmersiveExperience #NTMEC #WeAreGather #GrumpySailor

After a short hiatus, the annual Grumpathlon has made a comeback onto the Grumpy social calendar! The prestigious Kraken Cup was awarded to the winning team of 2024, in a battle of brains and brawn. Following a morning of fierce competition in the CBD, the Grumpy crew reconvened at Woolloomooloo for an absolute cracker arvo of fun on the harbour. A few sore heads (and bodies) the next day, but absolutely worth it. An epic day to say thank you to our Grumpy crew for their exceptional efforts, everyday!
