Staff promotions are an important way for us to reward the achievements and contributions of individual team members, and also to reflect on our values. At a studio-wide celebration last week, Co-Managing Principal Sarah Buckeridge, FRAIA spoke to this, saying: ‘I think at Hayball we pride ourselves on our generosity of knowledge sharing, and that's something we really seek to reward through these promotions.’ Sarah went on to address the leadership qualities we most appreciate, including ‘the enthusiasm and commitment to mobilise a diverse team, and build trust and respect from everyone in the organisation.’ Hayball sincerely congratulates Associates Janet Vogels and Eilish Barry, and Senior Associates Emma Parkinson, Steve Jones, and Emma Chrisp.

Designed for Assemble in Kensington, Melbourne, 15 Thompson Street welcomed its first residents into a building created to prioritise community. The 199-apartment project is delivered under Assemble's innovative built-to-rent-to-own purchase pathway, and first in partnership with AustralianSuper. Design choices at every level were informed by the idea of social and environmental sustainability going hand in hand. Open-air walkways provide natural light and crossflow ventilation, and opportunity to connect with residents. Communal room at ground floor and a rooftop terrace with kitchen and herb gardens, a basketball court, sandpits and a chicken coop encourage leisure and connection for all ages. The location of the building itself encourages a more sustainable lifestyle, with the Capital City Trail and public transport choice nearby. Thomas Gilbert, the project Principal, says: “You can ride your bicycle directly off the street and into the building,” says Gilbert. “Cycling was not an afterthought in this project—we have embedded into our design accessways and bike parking, separating it from carparks and creating a more resident-friendly experience.” The project was recently featured in Architecture & Design (Australia) and The Fifth Estate articles. We recently had the pleasure of attending an event for Architects Without Frontiers, with whom we’ve partnered for nearly a decade, proudly providing financial support and pro bono design services. Co-Managing Principal Tom Jordan, Senior Associate Emma Parkinson and Associate Jean-François Laroche waved the Hayball flag as champions for our AWF initiatives, including the current development of climate-resistant community building to be deployed in vulnerable locations such as Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu, and the Solomon Islands. Tom is passionate about our ongoing contribution, saying: “The ability for our practice to be involved in projects like this provides a wealth of valuable knowledge and insight for our team into where architecture should be heading: how we can learn from our clients, communicate ideas, and provide meaningful and useful spaces designed for the people that actually use them." With continued support for industry sponsorship and equity programs, we’re thrilled to announce the inclusion of Simone Terasaka in this year’s Property Council of Australia’s 500 Women in Property program. Simone, a Project Leader currently working to deliver our GLM2 projects, is sponsored by Principal Richard Weinman and feels inspired by the opportunity, saying: “As an architect and a mother, I see the Program as an opportunity to connect with women in the industry and gain insights into the challenges they have faced and overcome in their career. Empowering the next generation of practitioners, especially women in a male-dominated industry, is a personal mission.” Richard Weinman added: "I derive immense satisfaction from the prospect of imparting knowledge and witnessing the progression of someone's career journey. This program presents a genuine opportunity to contribute to Simone's professional evolution and foster her success within the industry." #sponsorhip #equity #personaldevelopment The GPT Group #womeninproperty #femaletalent

With the Green Building Council of Australia and Hassell providing a framework, “there is now an opportunity for architects to develop an agreed methodology and approach to benchmark and measure social value in their projects,” writes Eilish Barry. “So, where to begin? Social value can be created at every stage of a development, but it’s highly contextual. It’s critical that any project should start with authentic community engagement. The aim is to understand local needs before putting pen to paper.” Read the article here: https://aus.archi/7yst From Architecture Bulletin | Design for Wellbeing: Supporting health, inclusivity and comfort | 2024. “A recent ground-breaking study into the Wellbeing of Architects in Australia, found that working in the profession isn’t necessarily easy,” write Vicki Leibowitz, Naomi Stead and Byron Kinnaird. “In fact, many architects display concerningly low levels of personal wellbeing.” Read the article here: https://aus.archi/6hnf From Architecture Bulletin | Design for Wellbeing: Supporting health, inclusivity and comfort | 2024. We are proud to collaborate with BHC Creating Liveable Communities to deliver 201 social and affordable homes within Queensland’s largest waterfront renewal precinct in Northshore, Hamilton. Designed in partnership with Anna O'Gorman Architect and ASPECT Studios, the precinct prioritises community connection and sustainable living. Resident wellbeing is at the heart of our design approach, with dwellings 100% cross-ventilated, and configured as a series of inter-connected buildings linked by generous communal landscaped spaces.
We are thrilled to announce that BHC was selected as the preferred provider to deliver 201 social and affordable homes at Northshore Hamilton. Northshore Hamilton is Queensland’s largest waterfront urban renewal project and a 5-star green star precinct. This project is part of a larger development to provide approximately 1,300 additional homes in the precinct, supporting the Queensland Government’s Homes for Queenslanders Plan. “We are honoured to be part of this transformative project and look forward to working closely with Economic Development Queensland (EDQ) and other stakeholders to bring this vision to life,” said BHC CEO Rebecca Oelkers. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue on this exciting journey to provide more homes for Queenslanders. Please see the Queensland Government media statement for further information on this project. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gHtnUgnE #affordablehousing #socialhousing

✈️ Please join us in congratulating to Michaela Prunotto – Master of Architecture alum, Urban Ecology and Design Lab research assistant and Hayball architectural graduate – on receiving the Fritz Janeba Travelling Scholarship for this year. Michaela will journey to Switzerland this September to study the new joint Master of Advanced Studies in Urban and Territorial Design (MAS UTD) at EPFL and ETH Zürich. ‘Though an architecture course, classes have titles like Agrarian Questions, Critical Writing, Fieldwork, Regenerative Landscape Practices, Sessions on Territory and Urban Ecology – an alignment exists between my interests as an emerging practitioner and the the MAS UTD’s topics and values. Together, with reference to Lola Sheppard, we approach the field of architecture and design as an expanded territory thickened by competing climatic and cultural forces. Given our climate emergency and the building environment’s contribution to it, I am motivated to work for socio-ecological change in the discipline and across geopolitical boundaries. The MAS UTD will equip me with the skills and wider network to focus and empower these intentions.’ We look forward to sharing missives from Michaela later this year. Frasers Property Australia has recently launched ‘Beyond Bricks,’ an inspiring video capture of their Burwood Brickworks – a major precinctual development on which Hayball is proud to have worked. Ten years in the making and invested with ‘a lot of love’ from the consultant team, the project adapted an historical quarry site into a new neighbourhood rich in amenity, social impact, and environmental credentials. The Brickworks project elevates ideas of community, connection and belonging from idealistic notions to the lived reality of residents, as you’ll hear. Video by Saxall Video & Animation.
