The LIWA Aquatics Conference, held 15 -17th August– in Perth, showcased the latest innovations and trends in aquatic facilities, sustainability, and community wellness. A key highlight of the event was a series of presentations which included Yvette Audet, Vice President of the International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS) and Chair of IAKS Australia & New Zealand. She presented a collection of whitepapers and case studies that focused on crucial topics such as planning and designing aquatic facilities with an emphasis on sustainability and community impact. What a fantastic topic for discussion following on from last nights IAKS Australia & New Zealand Architects forum. Stimulating new creative thinking, collaboration and great discussions by inspiring industry architect Dr. Irina Akhmanova.
Dr Jennifer Erin Camulli Reflecting on our conversation in Cologne last October, I'm compelled to initiate an open discussion about vulnerable groups in society involved in the life of a sports venue. As we've seen in government services, a significant increase in female decision-makers (e.g., in Scandinavian countries) often leads to a more social approach to budgeting, state programs, and development vectors. I wonder if this phenomenon could also transform our architectural community? Can we abruptly change our approach to inclusivity and accessibility in design, which has been developed over centuries, simply by demanding change? Or do we need architects with diverse experiences and expertise integrated into design teams to drive this transformation? This would involve going beyond minimal accessibility requirements and prioritizing the well-being of all users. As humans, we often overlook the challenges faced by people with varying abilities because our brains tend to assume we'll always be young and healthy. But the world has changed; we have more and more ageing nations, children with special needs and families with members with different abilities. All this should affect our design approach - but in practice, not in theoretical reports. True inclusive design starts with the inclusive design team?
