About us

Intrepid Travel offers sustainable experience-rich travel via more than 900 trips on all seven continents. As a certified B Corp, we're a business that balances purpose and profit. We are the largest global adventure tour operator with a network of 27 destination management companies (DMCs) and a not-for-profit foundation. Majority owned by its co-founders and staff, Intrepid has been taking small groups to travel the local way, on real-life experiences for more than three decades. Through our global DMC network, our expert teams operate the majority of our trips, as well as tours on behalf of other leading travel brands. Our not-for-profit, The Intrepid Foundation, has raised over AUD $15.5m for 160 charities around the world since 2002. We've been carbon neutral since 2010, and in 2020 we became the only tour operator with verified science based targets – these are ambitious 2035 emissions reduction targets, in line with a 1.5°C future. We love to see our people taking advantage of their employee perks. For Reservations Team Lead Nepal, Urmila Tamang, this year that meant taking her first free-of-charge Intrepid trip on our Premium Bhutan itinerary, and her second trip outside of her home country! Our office in Nepal has set a goal to have 80% of the local team utilise their free-of-charge trip benefit annually, to help them experience our brand in the world, connect with our product and customers and take time away from their desks to recharge. Well done Urmila and team Nepal for embracing new opportunities 👏 Read some of Urmila's trip highlights below and visit careers.intrepidtravel.com to learn more about life at Intrepid.

Earlier this year we launched our first itinerary in Saudi Arabia, a Women’s Expedition, aimed at showcasing a different perspective on the country. Our customers have had an incredibly positive response to this trip, selling out our first departure slated for November. In preparation for the season, we’ve been delivering training for twelve new and aspiring leaders. The group were joined by our local Saudi partner and tourism entrepreneur Sara Omar in Riyadh, where they learnt about Intrepid’s approach to responsible travel, health and safety, and heard Sara’s experience and perspectives from leading trips in the country. In a destination where tourism is still in its early stages of development, we’re proud to be helping leaders forge new careers, supporting local businesses - a majority of which are women owned and run - to benefit from the growth of tourism, and offering travellers greater opportunity for connection with the community.

Head of Partnerships - Intrepid Travel

I was really proud to represent the solo female traveller and Intrepid Travel on BBC Talking Business show last week. A few personal take-always: 🧗♀️Women are looking for adventure, meaningful experiences and seeking the edges of their comfort zone. 🎟️Solo does not mean single! It means women are putting their travel needs first …and meeting others like them ❤️ 🗺️ Travel experiences that empower not only the traveller but the women and communities in destination, are where women can connect and learn from each other. 💳 women, in particular 45 years + tend to have higher disposable income and are regular travellers. 👣Safety is a concern for women travellers, which is another reason why small group travel is so popular. As I prepare to leave my family in Johannesburg, to join agents on a trip that includes a stay with the all female anti-poachers unit The Black Mambas - I can’t help but feel the future of travel for women is going to be an inspiring one! #theworldneedsmoreintrepidpeople Lucy Siebert Madeleine Barber

Did you know that we offer 20 hours of volunteering leave to every office-based team member annually? 💛 We believe this is one small way we can support our teams to give back, while helping to create more connected, healthier communities. #BCorps

At Intrepid Travel, we don’t just focus on low impact travel - we believe in creating positive change and giving back to our communities. One of the ways we do that is via our staff volunteering program and so far this year, 344 team members have volunteered an incredible +2200 hours.  As a proud B Corp, we offer all our team 20 volunteer hours per year to lend a hand and gain insights into social and environmental issues. Together, the Intrepid teams have volunteered at 90 global volunteer organisations.  Check out some of the amazing projects the teams have supported in the last 6 months 👇 #moreintrepidpeople Sara King Biheng Zhang Nkechi "Payton" Iheme

Next month, we're excited to run our second London to Marrakech 'all by rail' trip in collaboration with PURE Life Experiences. This 6-day premium, low-carbon trip covers four diverse countries entirely by train, avoiding flights.    Being able to offer flight-free options is important to us, as it is a lower carbon way to travel. We also view train travel as part of the experience, rather than just a means of transport. During this trip, our travellers will visit local communities and experience the relaxing pace rail travel brings.   This itinerary is a journey through Europe and Morocco, starting with a Eurostar trip from London to Paris, where travellers will enjoy a food tasting tour and explore the iconic landmarks. Continuing by train to Barcelona for tapas, then onto to Seville for more local flavours and a flamenco performance. Cross into Morocco to taste Tangier’s local cuisine, followed by a train trip to Fes where travellers will explore the medieval medina, enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner and experience a henna ceremony with live music.   We're thrilled that this journey is once again fully booked for this year, but if you're keen to whet your appetite for a future train adventure, head here to learn more: https://lnkd.in/g-u4mydb

Chief People Officer at Intrepid Travel

I am super proud to share Intrepid Travel has been named one of HRD Australia Innovative HR Teams for 2024, recognising businesses breaking boundaries to innovate the HR Industry! A key reason for this recognition is the introduction of our expanded global family leave policies, including paid parental leave, bereavement leave (including for pregnancy loss), family and domestic violence leave and additional support for our team who travel regularly and have caring responsibilities at home. Families come in all shapes and sizes and we are here to support our team through key moments in their lives. The People team at Intrepid are spread over 18 countries and work together every day to improve the experience for our people. We also have a lot of fun and I couldn't be more proud of the impact this team has and what's to come! #MoreIntrepidPeople

Meet our new – and first – Chief Impact Officer, Nkechi "Payton" Iheme. 🌟 🌟  Payton is a transformative public policy, diversity, and government relations advocate, based in Washington, D.C., who joins our C-suite team to lead our purpose, philanthropy, and impact work. This includes our not-for-profit, the Intrepid Foundation.  Payton joins our team at a time when communities around the world are experiencing growing social isolation, division and inequality. She brings a passion for creating a safer and more equal world for all and will work to ensure that our business is a force for good - supporting global communities and connections.  As a seasoned traveller herself, Payton has visited more than 50 countries and is looking forward to experiencing a Women’s Expedition soon.  We’re excited to have Payton on our team – welcome!   #MoreIntrepidPeople

An early start this morning as I spoke with The Times Radio about the new regulations coming into force to limit large tour groups in Venice today.   Concerns about over-tourism aren't new, but this summer feels like a tipping point, with protests and unhappy locals across many destinations. This is happening because of unsustainable tourism development and travellers taking precedent over the needs of local people.   What's the answer? There's no one-size-fits-all solution. It might be limiting capacity, introducing taxes or educating people to become more responsible, conscious travellers.   Ultimately, we have to continue advocating for a model of tourism that benefits both travellers AND local people.
