She attended both an Invictus and Warrior Games, in what she calls some of the "best experiences of her life." Eager to replicate the camaraderie of competing amongst veterans at the international level, Erin has joined Team Invictus Australia for this year's World Lifesaving Championships on the Gold Coast. As the Paralympics are getting closer, we are reminded of the power of adaptive sports in transforming the lives of competitors. Wheelchair Rugby is a beloved adaptive sport in the global Invictus Community, favoured for its intensity, accessibility and need for strong teamwork. Paralympics Australia this week unveils Forged In Steel, a ground-breaking documentary which provides unprecedented access to the Australian Steelers Wheelchair Rugby Team. The documentary takes viewers behind closed doors as the Steelers deal with raw emotions, intense competition, and personal sacrifices to fight for their Paralympic dreams. The documentary was produced by Nine’s Wide World Of Sport in partnership with Paralympics Australia and our mates at Good Shout. You can watch the premiere on Nine and 9Now at 8:40pm on Monday, August 19, immediately following The Block.

Over the last month our Veteran Engagement Managers have been busy connecting more than 325 veterans and their families members to 37 sporting events across the country. This month it was great to collaborate with local clubs across sporting organisations such as parkrun Australia, Australian Dragon Boat Federation , Pickleball Australia Association Limited, Bowls Australia many more. Invictus Australia's commitment to empowering veterans and their families through sport goes beyond recreational activities. It is these events that serve as vital platforms for building connections through shared experiences, promoting overall wellbeing, promoting a strong support network and empowering the defence community. Thanks to one of our Premier Partners NEC Australia, a group of veterans and family members had a once in a lifetime experience at the recent Essendon Football Club vs Adelaide Football Club AFL match held at Marvel Stadium. As well as this group forming the guard of honour which Essendon ran through, Brett Lewis (Warrior Games 2024 alumnus) and Rye Shawcroft (Warrior Games 2019 and Invictus Games 2018 alumnus) were given the opportunity to complete the coin toss and ball delivery pre match. IPAR, another one of our Premier Partners, played a crucial role in connecting Veteran Engagement Manager Christopher Burson with a defence family of four who attended the event. Earlier this week during our all staff workshop, the team came together to experience a yoga class run by our partners at Frontline Yoga. For some on the team, this was their first class, and for others, yoga is a regular activity. This class provided a beautiful moment for the team to connect and experience some mindfulness and stillness at the end of the day. The session was held at the ANZAC Memorial in Sydney, who are continued supporters of our work. The memorial provided the perfect setting for the team, and we thank them for the opportunity to once again utilise their facilities to connect. #invictusaus #invictusaustralia #frontlineyoga #yoga

Matt Formston, one of our ambassadors and a blind (3% vision) Paralympian, world champion surfer and cyclist, is the epitomy of unconquered, having lost 95% of his vision by the time he was five and told by teachers and doctors that he would never play sport. His new film, the Blind Sea, sees him tackle his most "dangerous challenge yet, surfing the monster waves of Nazaré." In a couple of weeks, The Blind Sea will be screening in local cinemas across the country with Matt, Daniel Fenech, Erin Fenech and Dylan Longbottom hosting Q&A sessions at the events. Congratulations to Birmingham on their successful bid for the 2027 Invictus Games. We were thrilled to receive a generous donation from the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles' ANZAC Round jersey auction. Invictus Australia Veteran Engagement Manager Jye Martyn accepted the check on behalf of the team, which was the result of auctioned signed jerseys from the Sea Eagles' win over the Parramatta Eels earlier this year. These funds will continue to support our work in utilising sport to empower the Defence community, improve the physical and mental wellbeing of veterans and family members and foster connection to strengthen Defence support networks.
